Exhibition – James Dodd – Pacific Riff – Melbourne

James Dodd’s solo exhibition, Pacific Rift, the opening of which was held at Lindberg Galleries in Melbourne on the weekend, is a beautiful collection of sun-soaked works. Taking Pacific regional Australian graffiti and reinvigorating the art through photograph and stencil, Dodd takes us into his liquid, dream like world; and the journey is quite something.

Each piece holds its own sense of story, something seemingly indescribable, yet worth the vivi,d colourful and pattern rich expedition!

“I have chosen a couple of limiting parameters for this project…This body of work has been as much about colour as form. The choices are an extension of my ongoing use of vibrant fluorescent colours as hijacked from bill posters and street advertising.”

This solo exhibition is my second with Lindberg Contemporary. The work that I have produced represents a return to stencil driven outcomes. Encompassing experiments that link the work to ongoing investigations, the show consists of a number of installed and painted works executed over the last 6 months.” – Dodd said.

The show runs til the 25th of September so if you didn’t make the opening night there is still plenty of time to get down and get immersed!

Event – In The Cut Vol.3 – Melbourne

As part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, In The Cut – Vol.3 bring together the best of both worlds this October when (the aptly named) Good Times Studios host a mega event that will have North-side peeps adoring the walls and shaking the floors all in synchronised harmony.

Bringing “the laneways of Fitzroy to the underground of Carlton” the one night only exhibition/live music event will showcase some of Melbourne’s best, brightest, funky and fresh including artists; Deb, Braddock, Kaitlin Beckett, Junky Projects, Phoenix, 23rd Key, Flake, Lazerfist, Nelson Nokela and beats provided by The Delta Riggs, The High Society, Ishu & Class A, One/Six, Durban Poison and Van Grizzly!

“In the Cut is an exhibition that’s not only about the art it’s also about the music that inspires it.  A combination for the senses: street art, ‘paste-ups’, stencil and installation mixed with hip-hop, funk, indie tunes and Melbourne’s finest MC’s- what a combination!

Artwork that would once adorn the bricks and mortar of the infamous laneways will now be showcased in an exciting group show featuring some of Melbourne’s finest street artists. But with an unusual formula: all proceeds from the sale of the art will go directly to the artists – 100%”

Another show we just can’t wait to see!

Exhibition – A Cut Above – Adelaide

We get more excited than Rebecca Black [ed –who??] on a Friday whenever we hear of something fresh in the world of stencil art. A relatively new medium of artistic expression, stencils have created a new and significant niche within the urban arts culture, and in our opinion, have paved the way for some of the most expressive and influential craftspeople to dominate this industry yet.

A CUT ABOVE, hosted by Joshua Smiths Espionage gallery, will showcase the carved out creations of international talents such as; David Soukup and Scotch Willington from the USA, PISA 73 from Berlin, as well as local stencil celebs. E.L.K., Joshua Smith, and Fletch.

This Exhibition will play host to what could be regarded as some of the best stencil work in the world today, and, considering the added bonus of free wine on the night from Bird In Hand (because we know you just can’t appreciate amazing art without it, right?), this is definitely not an event that you would want to miss out on if you’re in Adelaide.

Exhibition – Bennett – NSW

The goodness hits Sydney next month with a new solo show, Oranges & Lemons, from the colourful and talented hands of Bennett.

“Sydney based artist BENNETT, currently working out of StupidKrap studios, uses aerosol, acrylic and mixed media to create works influenced and inspired by the ever changing urban surroundings.  His thought provoking, sometimes controversial  and shocking statements are achieved by taking mundane, everyday imagery and twisting it to suggest an alternative meaning. The use of textural and layered backgrounds juxtaposed with bold foreground images further extended this contrast created within these mash-up styled works.

Re-contextualising common and mass produced objects and themes is a major characteristic within BENNETTS’ works, these alternative narratives and scenarios are created to both entertain and challenge the audience to explore each piece in the search for their own meaning or conclusion.”

Exhibition – Megan Dell & Nicole Tattersall – Drip – VIC

When it comes to doing duo shows, Megan Dell and Nicole Tattersall, are, ioho, right up there. Their individual styles are superb, and when combined in a show together they produce a swath of subtle pizzazz that emanates from the walls. Both have a great following of fans, and both are great artists – this is yet another great addition to the For Walls gallery line up for 2011, and it’ll be a fun night at the opening, that’s for sure.

We had a great interview with Nicole Tattersall last year, and we’re really looking forward to catching up with Megan Dell as well …

“Following on from their successful duo exhibition at No Vacancy Gallery last year, Megan Dell and Nicole Tattersall have once again teamed up to bring you DRIP, which will see both artists exploring spray-paint drips, runny water-colours, and wash painting.
Both Megan and Nicole have a street-art background, and are influenced by surfing and skateboarding, which is visible in the unique pieces they create.

The artworks in the exhibition will be in a variety of mediums and methods from stenciling to illustrations, as well as the materials being painted on. Megan often recycles skateboards and pieces of wood found in hard-rubbish piles, turning them into her canvas and working with their ingrained, weather-beaten character. Nicole often paints on broken surfboards, as well as salvaged timber, creating unique pieces with an environmentally-conscious theme.”
