Review – Parklife 2007

With quick entry to the event, and a near lack of a line even at a peak entry period, Parklife started off with a bang. A huge area, multiple tents, plenty of room for everyone – this looked set to be one of the best starts to the summer festival season for quite some time. (more…)

Interview – Greg Packer

Having flown the flag for Australian electronic music for so long, Greg Packer now finds himself in a position that many DJs would be more than envious of, and it is this hard work over the years that is to be celebrated this Friday night in his very own showcase at The Nine. For years, Greg Packer has been one of the major faces of Australian drum’n’bass, with international recognition and acclaim.

Since his first release on Hardleaders in 2001 he has clocked up a remarkable ninety releases on over thirty two different labels, including the likes of Good Looking, 31 and Tangent. Yet with this astonishing average of one release every month over seven years, it may only just be now that he is really about to hit his stride with the resurrection the once stalled Interphase, Australia’s only dedicated drum and bass record label. Yet the question on many peoples lips is; why did Interphase go through such a long hiatus after between releases? At the end of the day, Greg believes that the finger may point at the economic problems that have plagued the record industry in the past few years. (more…)

Review – Goldie

It was another return of one of the old school legends, that had the interest of punters piqued, when Goldie returned to Perth on Saturday night to play at Rises Revolution night.

A strange crowd presented itself upon entry – a mix of dnb heads, rise goers and the odd strange people who seem to have merely wandered in off the streets gave off a fairly strange vibe, but as hit the stage a few heads were already getting into it. (more…)

Review – DJ Randall

It was with eagerness that a crowd of dnb heads turned up at the Hyde Park Hotel to witness the return of old school favourite, DJ Randall, to Perth last Saturday night.

Having unfortunately missed most of the local boys sets due to prior engagements, it was heard that most of them stuck to a more cross-time selection by laying quite a few older tunes mixed in with the new. Its always a disappointment when sets by the local lads are missed, as often the case that they are standout performances in the night, but reports back are that Muller, Rintel and all played great sets. Review – Revolution 1st Birthday @ Rise

For a year now, the Rise nightclub has been presenting a different face to its Saturday night lineup. Taking elements from all styles of electronic music, Rise has managed to pull of a difficult feat in Perth – producing a night with a span of different genres of music, week after week in order to please its punters. Review – Inland Knights

Inland Knights are a near household name for house fans and DJs specialising in the unbroken side of electronica. With almost every house DJ of any form of reputation owning at least one of their singles, and boasting a rather more than credible production and performance past, the night was set for a completely off the hook event. Interview – Roller

For several years, every Friday morning, a mysterious plague has been affecting Perth Drum n Bass fans. With symptoms including headaches, nausea, twitching, partial deafness and rictus smiles stretching across faces, the plague has been non-stop in its assault – and we can blame this virulent epidemic on the enthusiastic and salubrious minds behind ROLLER.

Its been a long ride for all the boys of Roller, who over the past six years have not only won the Best Regular Weeknight category in PDMA awards for the past three times running, but also carry the reputation of now being one of the longest running drum and bass nights in the Southern Hemisphere. Review – Elite Force

It seems only a short time since Elite Force, the creative mind behind a new wave of innovative tech-orientated breaks, last visited PE to display why exactly it is that a good party is not always to found in tried and tested formulas.

With a breakbeat scene that is often heavily orientated towards the “party-breaks” end of the spectrum, and with punters more familiar with funky styled and go-jump beats, the prospect of a tech orientated evening was promising. (more…)

Interview – DJ Rousa

For someone who has traveled within Perth DJ circles for longer than most, Aaron Morgan, aka Rousa, still holds a distinguished place in the ears of many as a champion of a genre which has had incredible highs, and incredible lows. From the heady days of large scale events, where it took the forefront of almost every stage, to the sometimes quiet backrooms of the Hyde Park on ROAR Tuesdays with other DJs such as Hutcho, Mental and Kevin, Hardcore has seen its fair share of DJs come and go – many lingering, many retiring, and many moving to the at times affable fields of drum n bass. Yet there is no doubt in anyone’s mind, that hardcore has played a major part in the shaping of Perths club scene – and Rousa has contributed more than his fair share of dedication to keeping the genre, not only alive, but fresh and kicking. Review – Parklife 2005

In the run up to the summer festival series, upon seeing the lineup for Parklife, it was a joy to behold so many quality acts on the one lineup. Looking for all intents and purposes as a mini rendition of the seminal Breaksfest, Parklife had all the frills of the Belvoir event plus the added bonus of catering for those of a more house orientated persuasion. The fresh lineup coupled with a fresh new venue in the form of The ‘Deen and the associated block curtailed of traffic offered something unique to the Northbridge area, and it was as much the uniqueness of the venue and associated lineup as it was the big names attending that drew the crowds in their hundreds. Review – Bumpa – Tipper – Skool Of Thought

With another incarnation of the Bumpa series of breakbeat events at Heat Nightclub been and gone, there is much to be said. The visiting international contingent, comprising the unique and freshly innovative Tipper and Heavy Weight Breaks phenomenon Skool of Thought, performed to high expectations and did not disappoint.

Interview – Kenny Ken

It’s late in the afternoon, and Kenny Ken is in front of his computer, sending and receiving tracks on the ‘net, preparing for his upcoming Australian tour. “When you’ve djed as much as I have, you tend to not practice as much,” he jokes. Yet Kenny has spent the past week doing exactly that, sifting through his record room looking for tunes and preparing an arsenal of dub-plates, almost fourteen in all, to compliment the older style Ragga tracks that he will be playing whilst here in Perth. “I have a bunch of stuff,” he remarks, “a good few classics as well – some thing that people might not have heard back then.”

Review – Bumpa – Phantom Beats

With the promise of some of the best of local breakbeat talent alongside the undeniably infamous breaks legends, Phantom Beats, the scene was set last Saturday eve at Heat Nightclub for those inclined to snare laced drums. As the night began, the fourth iteration of the Bumpa series presented itself with ferocity, startling punters with its fresh take on the nuevo-breakbeat scene. From its initial inception last August, and following on the footsteps of September’s local showcase, as well as a prior staunch performance by the mighty Stanton Warriors, Bumpa has quickly become the monthly gig of choice for breaks fanatics.
