Interview – Pendulum

“The day that you feel comfortable and happy with anything, is probably the day you give up and retire,” cites Gareth McGrillen, who, along with Paul Harding and Rob Swire constitutes a founding members of Pendulum, arguably one of the most progressive musical groups producing music today. “You always need that drive, its really essential to us – our drive has always been about 70% competitive and 30% love, and having that competitiveness as a lynch-pin of what you’re doing ensures you’re never really happy with where you are.”

Their need to constantly reinvent themselves has seen Pendulum rise from their humble origins in the drum’n’bass genre, to the heights of a gold album producing band. Having played to some of the largest crowds at some of the most prestigious festivals across the world, they are often surprised at how swiftly time has passed. Read more »

Interview – Pendulum

Posted in Drum'N'Bass, Interviews on March 31st, 2008 by facter

Amongst the drift and tide of the musical realm, it is a rarity for an electronic music group to have mass market appeal, and yet several years ago, three guys from Perth embarked upon a journey that would take them not only to the top of the drum and bass charts, but also into the living rooms of anyone with an interest in cutting edge music. No stranger to fans since breaking out with their seminal album, Hold Your Colour, Pendulum are now poised on the verge of being one of the few bands who have been able to escape their niche, as their upcoming new album, In Silico, is sure to prove. Bass Invursions #31

Posted in Bass Invursions on March 24th, 2008 by facter

It was another Easter weekend of mayhem, and it was great to see everyone down at Rollers Easter special, and even better to see d’n’b on a Thursday night again – the after parties at both Capitol and Mekka were amazing as well. With a weekend followed by the nuts-oid shenanigans of Craze dropping some d’n’b at Ambar amongst his other tunes, and Bukem and Conrads performance at Shape, well, if anyone had a doubt as to the state of play for d’n’b in Perth over and Easter weekend, then this one just gone should put to rest any rumours of us being dullsville.

Bass Invursions #29

Posted in Bass Invursions on February 24th, 2008 by facter

Having been looking forward to Nu:Tone and Cyantific for some time, there was very little disappointment at last Friday nights performance at Shape – both of the Hospital boys played amazing sets. Not to mention that our local boy, Sardi, also had a great run of the eve with a perfect example of why he was the warm-up act – one of his best I’ve seen. From reports back, Limewax and Dylan also put forth and incredible display, that is, if my housemate’s first words the day after were “that was the best fuckin set ever” are anything to go by. This week sees a number of big announcements for nights in Perth over the next few months, so it looks set to continue to be a busy time. Read more »

Interview – Aquasky

Posted in Breakbeat, Drum'N'Bass, Interviews on March 15th, 2005 by facter

Things have come full circle for the Aquasky lads who, in 2000, startled the breakbeat world with their groundbreaking track, 777. At the time, the Bournemouth trio were better known for their d’n’b outings, and Kieron admits that breaks fell somewhat into their laps by surprise. “It was funny cos we just wrote them tunes, 777 and Shure Shot….we had no clue about the breaks scene …we just wanted to do some stuff and made it up …that’s how the tunes came out …we didn’t listen to anything any one else was doing so it was kinda accidental really – but fun too…no rules! We just took all the production stuff we knew from making d’n’b and threw it in there …and [we] came up with a new sound, I think.”
