Exhibition – Chris Town – Sydney

Sydney-siders beware as China Heights Gallery has come well prepared tonight! Chris Town’s new solo show ‘Randy Credit Ruins Daily Contrast’ will be in full swing!

“My latest body of work is made up of two parts. The first are works that combine found object assemblage with painting in gouache. In doing so, I am attempting to illustrate the contrast between a natural world, comprised of the pure, joyous hues of an organic landscape and the urban world, dominated by the grey grime of pollution, where rubbish skirts our ankles at every turn. The seed for these works germinated during two visits to China in 2010. It was in Beijing that I was struck by a city so incredibly polluted and seemingly steeped in an eternal ‘overcast’ state. In stark contrast to this, was the advertising, where packaging was soaked with such intense colours; perhaps a bizarre attempt to fool people into thinking they do not live in this intensely polluted world.

The second are works derived from my daily observations of printed media. Imbued with humour and irony, these works poke fun at, mock, and revel in the daily servings of manipulation the media expels. By choosing an image and placing a seemingly unrelated, hand-painted, headline against it, each works assemblage creates a new, singular narrative; intended to entice, inflame and repel.

These two bodies of work, when placed side-by-side in all their aesthetic contrast, form a visual commentary on what my world has become…" – Says Chris

Come see the show and get into this astutely observant, progressive art that is both pleasing to the eye as it is to the mind.

Young & Free @ Ironlak @ Everfresh @ 941Geary

Probably the biggest slew of photos to come out this week were those from over in San Francisco, where a huge contingent of Australian street artists converged for the Young & Free exhibition. It was an important show, and one of the biggest Oz contingent ever to hit an overseas location, and was an amazing showcase of some great artists from across the Australian street art scene. …

sleazymccheesy 07 thumb Saturday Snapshost Safe, Standard and SirumNew2, Mike Giant, and SleazyMcCheesy sent these pics to Ironlak who posted them up, you can see all of those here.

Everfresh threw a whooooleeee bunch of images and such up on their Tumblr (they unfortunately had a couple of issues with images in the past week, all seems to be fixed now though). Some absolutely mad work in it.

Exhibitions – Max Berry – Ears – NSW

We just saw this great show over at the fantastic Opening Hours site – Max Berry and Ears will both be opening shows at the Harrison Gallery in Paddington, Sydney next month – and this is just another time we wish we had a teleporter – serious, Kurzweil, get someone on to that, yeah?

“’Passenger’ – Max Berry’s latest exhibition ‘Passenger’ presents a series of paintings, jewellery and toys that reveals an imaginary world in flux.  Caught in moments of introverted retrospection and transcendence Berry’s figures consider the relationship between, the actual and the spiritual, agency and fate, life and death, and the passage between these states.

‘The Grid’  – The latest exhibition by Daniel O’Toole, otherwise known as ‘Ears’, investigates and deconstructs the formalist approach to portrait painting. With a background in graffiti Ears has been making a transition to studio artist that has allowed for an engaging body of large canvas works.  ‘The Grid” is a study of the uniform, identity and the conditions in which they exist.”

Two great artists, two great shows, one great roof.

Exhibition – Medium: Vinyl – NSW

Okay, so this looks cool – I remember a great exhibition that was done with vinyl back at Per Square Metre, and that one was amazing. This show will be held over two galleries, which just goes to show how many pieces that are in it, so if you’re in Sydney and want to see a great collection of work on this much loved musical medium check it out.

“Medium: Vinyl is Hardware Gallery’s annual celebration of art, music and the vinyl record. Artists have been invited to paint, etch, print, sculpt onto a vinyl record, transforming a much loved and familiar disc of music into something visually wonderful.

2011 is the biggest year so far, with 180 artworks in the exhibition and over 50 more showing across the road at Plump Gallery. Artists from every state in Australia and right across the globe have heard the call and embraced the vinyl. The medium is a modern icon, an antique,a collectable, an object to be recycled and a piece of art itself creating many considerations for the artists to respond to, visually and symbolically. As usual, the challenge of working outside the comfort zone has pushed artists to deliver their best.”

Exhibition – Gemma Lark – [Strings Attached] – NSW

We love work with a difference, and this one grabbed us instantly. With an intriguing take on the ancient art of puppetry, injecting it with a modern dose of creative and urbanity, Gemma Lark brings us the opening of her new solo show at Oh Really Gallery, [Strings Attached].

“A twisted tango into the world of knotted heart-strings, counterpoints and co-dependency, [Strings Attached] is a solo exhibition of the latest works by Sydney born, Melbourne based, visual storyteller, Gemma Lark.

Playing with the duality and inherent fragility of the relationship between puppet and puppeteer, [Strings Attached] invites the audience into the sometimes sweet, often sordid, reality of a critter caught between the roles of creator and the characters created. Without the puppeteer the puppet is rendered a lifeless doll, without the puppet the puppeteer is….

Drawing from her background in theatre design and puppetry, Gemma Lark’s sculptures and paintings are laced with the tattered nostalgia of a Grimm style fairytale; syrupy and poetic, whilst revelling in the bleakness that sits just below the last layer of varnish.”

Press Mill Wednesday – Late April 2011

We had some good feedback on our last Press Wrap, so we’re going to keep it running for a little while and see how it goes … so, once again, we’re rounding up the past fortnights media news about street art, graffiti and all that ilk – so read on …

  • Theres an interesting new web site that is using crowd sourcing to track “vandalism” here in Australia – Vandaltrak “asks the community to submit photos of graffiti and to pinpoint the location of the incident on a map. It then uses the location data to determine under whose jurisdiction the clean-up falls and forwards the report to the appropriate group.” – check the article here and on the SMH.
  • Theres a little article up on the Adelaide Now site on the recent opening of the Indelible exhibition.
  • This is just perplexing – the new NSW Attorney-General also wants to suspend a graffiti “vandals” license – does this strike anyone as odd? Some would wonder what exactly graff has to do with driving a car, and others would like to throw the book at them …
  • Stonnington Leader had a cool article on stencil artist Ralph Kempken – trams rule.
  • A whole bunch of Australian news outlets just picked up on French artists OakOaks challenging work … always great to see mainstream media so fast on the uptake when it comes to these kinds of things!
  • It was pretty amazing to see an Australian art critic pick up this years Pulitzer – kudos to Sebastian Smee. Like them, hate them, agree with them, disagree with them, critics are an essential part of art culture, and its great to see that one of the worlds most prestigious awards has reflected this.

Thats about all we’ve seen in the past two weeks – if you spot any media pieces that you’d like us to link to, just contact us and we’ll be happy cover it …

Press Mill Wednesday – Early April 2011

This is Press-Mill Wednesdays (we were going to call it WTF Wednesdays but thought this title was maybe a little less abrupt) .

Press Mill Wednesdays is a new fortnightly column where we’ll be summarising all the crap, cool, scary, delightful, misguided, spot on, angry and supportive articles that have run through the more “mainstream” press week in and week out. We thought it would be a cool way to keep you all up to date on what is happening in media-land, and what the current opinions and issues are out there … and, maybe even spotlight a few artists along the way, who have been showcased in the press – if we can do that as much as possible, we’ll be happy…

This is an experimental column, and if we feel it doesn’t work or if anyone has rational issues as to why we shouldn’t link to news articles, we’ll discontinue it. Also, if anyone has issue with any specific links to public domain articles, just let us know and we’ll remove them. We will admit that this column will show a little pro-bias towards graffiti, street and urban art (that said, we don’t condone illegal activities – we just understand that it is a part of the culture, and that it is being combated incorrectly), but we’ll attempt to keep it as neutral as possible, as always, where we can. There is a lot of goodness out there in “mainstreamland”, so don’t let all the negative media get to you – we’ll do our best to weed through it all, and find the good, as well as the bad …

  • The big one for the past week, is that new NSW Attorney General feels that the government should “emphasise more the anger that society feels toward the damage done by graffiti.” with his new plan to toughen of NSW graffiti laws, he also thinks that artists should go to jail for it – apparently painting pretty pictures more than once is a “serious offence”, so much so that the artists who do it should be thrown into jail with all the murderers and rapists, because, allegedly, street art and graffiti are gateway crimes. There’s a great blog entry on the ABC showing the other side of the argument as well – have a listen to it.
  • Cairns artists are apparently running out of space to get up on the walls – they’ve been working really hard to get the back lanes and uglier spots looking beautiful again, but they really need more spots, and more support from local businesses (ed. having gone to high school and lived in Cairns for many years, I love seeing this shit happening up there). If you know anyone up there that has a business and could use a lick of cool paint, let them know.
  • We don’t hear too much news from up in the NT, but this show looked like it was pretty cool – it included an urban street art laser exhibition, and the comment from the curator, Carol Phayer,  was pretty cool – “Street Art seeks to connect the everyday viewing audience with the streetscape and in doing so link the community back to the creative, cultural and natural landscape.”
  • Strathmore Secondary College is encouraging their students to brighten up the environment by painting colourful and rad murals – its nice to see councils and educational institutions teaching the up and coming artists of tomorrow that street art can be beautiful.
  • Skaters & artists honoured a fallen mate as a part of Mannings Youth Week Celebration, where “youths learnt the finer points of professional graffiti art during a session at Manning Regional Art Gallery, and came up with their own concepts and designs for the mural to adorn the skate park.” – grand.
  • Apparently Graffiti is on the rise in Ballarat and the police there are “working hard to tackle the city’s growing graffiti problem” – if you’re in Ballarat, you might want to go and check out Eureka street, because apparently its “just become a big billboard for everyone else to spray tags on there.” – they should just get someone to paint the wall up – maybe someone should give Ballarat City Council a call or something …
  • It’s a little older, but we liked this article of a piece that was done down in Tasmania by Hobart artists Trent Fischer and Lukan Smith on the MyState Financial building – cool stuff, dudes!

There’s so much more – but that’s enough for this first round. If you see something in the news and general media thats interesting, and relevant, and want to send us the link to include in this column, then please feel free to contact us and we’ll put it up for you …

Event – Project 5 – NSW

Event – Project 5 – NSW

Looks like the details are out for the next instalment of Project 5, and damn it looks like a doozy – Kid Zoom, Ghostpatrol, Deb & James Jirat Patradoon are all involved in this next one, and damn thats a grand lineup!

“Project 5 is an urban arts initiative presented by Cockle Bay Wharf, designed and curated by aMBUSH Gallery to support the arts through pop-up live art, music and auction events held each year.

Each Project 5 event commissions four (4) artists to paint large scale artworks in a pop-up live art and music event, which artworks are then auctioned in a high profile auction event to raise money for charity (the fifth member of Project 5). 100% of the proceeds are donated to charity to support creative programs for young people.

After the success of the first Project 5 pop-up live art event held in December 2009 with leading artists Ben Frost, Shannon Crees, Beastman and Phibs and the first auction event held in May 2010, which raised a groundbreaking $10,000 for Information and Cultural Exchange, Project 5 is now established as an ongoing arts initiative.

In 2010, Project 5 raised $25,000.00 from a total of 8 artwork sales – a record breaking result. The second Project 5 live art event in August featured Anthony Lister, Meggs, Ears and WeBuyYourKids which auction event raised a phenomenal $15,000.00 for our nominated charity.

Project 5 is proudly supported with the positive and innovative partnerships and collaborations of Cockle Bay Wharf, Darling Park, aMBUSH Gallery, Bay East Auctions and the artists.”

If you read these pages, these are must attend events – some of Oz’s most creative, talented and battle-worthy artists are involved, and the work they all create during the shows is awesome, to say the least.

Exhibition – Well Dressed Vandals – Lo-Fi – NSW

Good times – the crew from Lo-Fi are back for a little while, and are about to put on a variety of shows before the space they’ve been using gets renovated.

“Last year Sydney was treated to a concentrated program of week to week showcases of both local and international artists from the lowbrow visual arts movement. Highlights from the 6 month project including Meggs, Yone, Two one & TJ, Paste modernism II, Numskull, Beastman, Phibs, Creepy, Max Berry, Sofles, Josh Roelink’s Morte, Yimmy Yayo, Curvy 7 and Go Font Ur Self Ch 5.

After the intended 6 month programming of Lo-Fi Collective, The unique attic space is still awaiting some green lights to be transformed into a space that will showcase not only visual arts, but live music & performing arts. Therefore in the mean time, over here at Lo-Fi C Head Quarters, we thought we would treat Sydney to a few more shows to brighten up the calendar for the start of 2011.”

Its good to see them back for a couple more, and what a cool run they have lined up – first up, is the Well Dressed Vandals with “A collection of rap sprays and garments by the Well Dressed Vandals & friends.”
