Kieran Mangan has been doing a whole series of comics based on The Conspiracies of Ha-Ha lately, they’re fkn hilarious, and they want to turn it into a book – go and check it out, and donate to this more than worthy cause!! You should also check out this great video of Ha-Ha as he talks about his work, street art in Melbourne … and his theories on several conspiracies … but, seriously, if you haven’t seen the comic yet, you should!

Drypnz has a show coming up on Friday night, and he did this ultra cool preview trailer for it – take a look, its kinda fantastic as hell.

We missed this one a few weeks ago, but we wanted to put it up in light of his upcoming show – Drypnz does some silos. Nice

Michael Pecks show "The Landing" opened last night, and it was simply incredible. This is a really great short feature documentary on the artist and his work – also, check out the first part of our two aprt feature on Mr Peck here.

Just when we think we’ve seen everything that D*Face has been up to, Artygraffarti posts up some fun filled hotel room pasteup adventures from the man – very cool.

Prizm, Ben Frost and Anthony Lister teamed up recently for some tattoo mayhem. Mad!

Ben Frost Ghetto Ink from The Institute of Excellent on Vimeo.

"Acclaim Magazine sat down with Sydney born and bred, Tokyo based, Graphic Artist and co-founder of China Heights gallery Mark Drew to get the lowdown on his hat design for New Era" – he also has a show coming up in December, which we’ll let you know more about soon. Great collab this one!

Exhibition – Drypnz – Wellington

"I Wish I Want You Have I Don’t" is the curious and slightly emotionally laden title of a new show coming up from Drypnz, one of NZs most vibrantly creative street artists, and definitely one we rank up at the top.

As he says about his upcoming Wellington show "This body of work is an examination of the ideas of Want, Need, and Have. As a consequence, the presence of Envy and Coveting are illustrated."

The title of the show surely is slightly cryptic, helped along by the statement "There will also be specified open days to be announced that correspond with title, one evening focusing on ‘I Wish’, one ‘I Want’ etc" …which leads us to believe that there will be several small pop up events associated with the show, possibly some live art?

We don’t know, we do like a puzzle, and we’re looking forward to finding out more!!

Exhibition – Tanja Jade – Momoka – Melbourne

Tanja Jade, aka Misery, should be no stranger to those who are purveyors of all things illustrated, street and graff’d. Based out of New Zealand, she has, with a hell of a lot of diligent work, turned the fantastical world of her imagination into a mini empire of cool.

With painting, street art, fashion and toy design and so many more talents under her wing, Misery is a force of creative nature that is a perfect example of what an artist can accomplish with a heavy dose of determination and diversity.

For a nice primer, There is a whole heap of cool media, links to interviews and some great stuff in her shop over at her website, Miseryland.

We’ll be down at Backwoods for this opening for sure!

Exhibition – Regan Tamanui (HA-HA) – Personal Heroes – Auckland

Born in Hamilton, artist Regan Tamanui (aka HA-HA) lives and works in Melbourne, based out of the engimatic and infamous Blender Studios.

“Entirely self-taught, Tamanui spearheaded the Melbourne stencil movement in 2002. He is now regarded as Australia’s most prolific and skilled stencil artist to date and is represented in major national museums, private and corporate collections.

In his first solo exhibition in his home country of New Zealand, Tamanui presents Personal Heroes, a retrospective portrait series of New Zealand’s beloved rugby players to coincide with the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

In this series, Tamanui explores themes of ‘the working class man’ the ‘corporate team vs individual’. These themes perhaps serve as an allegory for contemporary culture and the 21st Century decline of community. However we see them these are rugby heroes, individuals who played for the team, mixed with the team, and tried hard to be one of the team. In essence they played for glory; team, individual, personal, but there was no talk of playing for the corporation, the advertisers, the sponsors, the brand. “

Personal Heroes is Tamanui’s lament for the passing of the mantel ‘Individual Hero’ over to ‘Corporate Property’. Held at OREXART Gallery (formerly Oedipus Rex Gallery) check out a legend, and his legends, in this very emotive portrait collection.

Exhibition – Spencer Harrington aka Random – Auckland

As part of Art Week Auckland, tomorrow Spencer Harrington’s (Random) colourful spectacle exhibition “The Colour of Originality” will be held at Kerr St Art Space at the Foothills of Mount Victoria, Davenport.

“…a young urban artist who has exhibited widely in the short time he has devoted himself to being a fulltime artist. He uses an extensive range of usual and unusual materials in stunningly innovative ways. These works have found their way into collections across New Zealand and now into Europe, America and Japan.

Since his return from Tokyo visual artist Spencer Harrington aka Random, has been gathering his ideas, influences, experiences and lessons into an exhibition titled ‘The Colour of Originality’. His exposure to new mediums, styles and genres through the Depot’s ArtsLab has resulted in a new level of works; Dreamscape oil painting, imaginative mixed media, conceptual installations, all with a surrealists twist which replaces the viewer’s reality with Spencer’s own world.”

Spencer has also been getting into body painting of late and they, from what we have seen, are some wicked stylin stuff! Art Week is looking pretty damn sick, so get on down for this and many other major shows!

Festival & Live Art – Graffiato – Taupō – NZ

Look at this line up … who wouldn’t want to party at this party!

With artists including Drypnz, Cinzah Seekayem, Reckt, BMD, Wert 159, Trust Me, Ghstie, Kame and more Taupō is “set to break its’ conservative mold this Labour Weekend, when sixteen of New Zealand’s leading street artists descend on the Central North Island town.”

Graffiato is a unique and dynamic street art festival, providing artists with an abundance of blank walls and a weekend to create vibrant and colorful permanent artworks. Curated by Cut Collective member, Ross Liew, Graffiato is a new festival delivered by Erupt Events, Taupō’s Arts Trust, who also deliver the nationally renowned biennial ‘Erupt Lake Taupō Festival’.”

“Graffiato is going to permanently change the face of street art in New Zealand,” said Mr Liew. “For some time now, street art and graffiti has been gaining an ever-increasing profile across the world. While certain names have cut through and now register for many within middle New Zealand, our own country’s practitioners have often been left overlooked. Graffiato will change that.”

We can’t be there, but if you’re in the country, you can – so get there  and support New Zealand’s massive pool of talent!

Exhibition – Kaitlin Beckett & Aramas – Melbourne

Rancho Notorious Gallery, Melbourne is bringing us to the ends of civilisation this month with “Post Apocalypse” from Just Another Agency members Aramas and Kaitlin Beckett (who we interviewed a few months ago).

“A journey into the post apocalypse of an alternate area…an anachronistic projection to a post human destruction.

What would happen if the human world suddenly ended in the 30′s? How would the world look now, would anything survive? Post Apocalypse is an exploration of that question. Humans are gone, destroyed by nuclear or biological hubris. The world that’s left is smoky and ruinous. This is an alternate future containing creatures evolving into a stylised world suddenly found empty. A story of survival, hyper evolution, mutation, glorious gas masks and deco punk themes.

KAITLIN BECKETT…Mechanical walkers driven by masked creatures walk under a glowing sky, jars are lined up to collect precious liquids and overlapping armour plates wrap around smoking viscera. The poisonous air has necessitated quick adaptations.

ARAMAS…In a world suddenly devoid of human, animals have undergone a hyper evolution. Forced to adapt to a ruined world. The results are animals new to consciousness, struggling to make sense of this strange world, the history that created it, and the future they now have to deal with. There’s new religion, old animosities, and a very human sense of curiosity and confusion. I see the bears of this world as the alternative to humans. Inheriting a past that they’re trying to understand, with some very strange results."

Kaitlin, a New Zealand native, uses mixed media of paint and illustration with airbrush, dip pens and her very own stained fingers, “lovingly embellished with iridescent pigments and metal leaf”.

“Since childhood I have had a love for the fantastic and the imaginary – I enjoy depicting the real and the unreal together, bio-mechanical juxtapositions, the unusual engaged with the everyday. The natural world, odd dreams, cryptozoology, literature and science fiction inspire me; and attachments, disguises, viscera and machinery are recurring themes in my bestiary. My characters invoke a sense of pathos, unease or humour, and I like to encourage others to invent their own narrative around my creatures” – Says Kaitlin

Aramas, Brisbane born (Melbourne situated) ethical student and self taught artist, also has an eclectic and beautiful painting style. Using creatures of animal origin and projections of current and future themes, she provokes thought and passion in her pieces.
Sometimes described as pessimistic, the translation of inner to outer in Aramas’ work is still palatable (and pretty pretty) in its execution.

These two incredibly talented ladies will be opening their minds and mediums to teach us a thing or two and we are grateful, what a combination!

Thursday Transmissions – Lanes, Stencils & Fresh

It’s been a busy week for this editor, but thankfully I do have time for a few things site related – and, there’s always time for a round of great videos!!!

If you didn’t see it, that awesome work that Twist and Amaze did up in Sydney caused a bit of controversy – apparently they painted the wrong spot, but, imho, such a great piece from such great artists should be preserved … check out the video here.

We just saw this one – two of the most wonderful champions and philanthropists of Australian street art, Andrew King and Sandra Powell, were interviewed just before the spectacularly curated, and highly successful, Young and Free exhibition over in San Fran. This video is a great glimpse into their views, as well as a really cool quick look at some of their collection. There are also some great snippets and words from Rone, and his views on Melbourne street art. Absolutely fantastic.

Sniders Lane was painting up by the crew from Just Another Agency last weekend, and SEARious Jones did some extra touchups – nice, nice work.

SEARIOUS JONES in SNIDERS LANE from Joske Films on Vimeo.

Speaking of Sniders Lane, TemporaryGallery did an interview with Toby from Just Another Agency whilst the laneway was being painted last weekend. Some cool background on the laneway, and the agency!

… they also had a few words to Kirpy himself as he was stencilling it up.

Reka also got up in the States recently with Quel Beast and Infinity. Mad.

REKA x Quel Beast x Infinity – NYC from MaNY Project on Vimeo.

Deow painted up this work at Revolver in Queenstown, NZ – saw this one over at Ironlak. Nice tunes from The Nudge.

Zach Freshwater got up in Perth recently – heres a nice video of the work he did.

We missed this one last month – Lister did a short video with the guys over at Frank 151 whilst he’s been preparing for his next solo show in West Hollywood.

That’s all for this week – feel free to send us your videos to include in our Transmissions column!

Interview – Gimiks Born

Gimiks Born, is a builder of worlds.

As a storyteller, and lover of both pop culture and ancient histories and mythology, each frame of the work he produces contains a creative narrative that is nothing short of immersive. With cross skilled disciplines in design, illustration, painting and street art, Brisbane based Gimiks Born has, over the years, developed characters, icons and storylines that coalesce his various passions into a visual playground.

When we had the chance to send some questions off to Gimicks, we didn’t hesitate – the man has been on our, and many others, radar for some time. What we received back, unsurprisingly, was a veritable feast of words and imagery, and we found ourselves plunged into a creative land of fantasy, fables and Bitter Winds …

With these amazing artists heralding from around Australia and New Zealand, each exhibit brings its own unique flavour.

“’Tarts and Flours’ explores Beck Wheeler‘s love for both painting and baking. Based in her homeland of New Zealand, Beck uses recycled objects and bright colours to bring her works to life. This exhibition will explore the domestic goddess within.

We’ve been waiting for a show like this one to pop up, and it looks like our friend Cleo Barnett has organised something pretty damn rad for everyone to check out over in NZ.

Exhibition – We Can Create – Auckland

We only just spotted this one, which opens up tomorrow in Auckland, and looks like a great showcase of a variety of talented artists – some of whom have graced our pages here before.

From Seekyam:

"Key speaker from the We Can Create programme, New York based illustrator, designer and fine artist Sara Blake is having a mini-exhibition at Alleluya Cafe in K Road’s venerable St Kevin’s Arcade.

She is flying over a selection of new work, never before exhibited especially for us lucky Aucklanders who’ll get first peek at this exhibition evening!

Alongside Sara’s work will be an artist showcase by The Busy Nice, featuring Henrietta Harris, Sarah Lanarch, Stephen Richardson, Cinzah Seekayem and Tane Williams. These artists produce some of the top illustrative work in our fair town and are each contributing original works for your optical pleasure.

This intimate evening will all feature music provided by The ARC and drinks specials from Coopers beer available on the night, this is not one to miss … But if you do … the exhibition will be reinstalled at the Aotea Centre THE EDGE where the We Can Create conference is taking place, 26-27th of August. Phew!"

We figure the press release says it all, looks like lots of cool art (and a fair bit of New Zealand street art influence) in the show, so we’ll keep it short except to say that it looks great! Love seeing shows like this happening over there! So if you’re up in the North tomorrow night, head down to K-Road to see the show!
