Exhibition – On The Wall – Finders Keepers – Sydney

We had the pleasure of attending the first On The Wall at Finders Keepers here in Melbourne, and thought that the quality of the artwork on display was top notch.

For the next Finders Keepers in Sydney, it looks like they’ve pumped it up even more, and just browsing the list there is a huge crop of talent.

If you haven’t had the chance to get to a Finders Keepers market yet, and you’re in Sydney, then this is a good opportunity to do so. Not only will there be lots of crafty design goodness, but there’ll be a hell of a lot of great art as well.

Interview – James Jirat Patradoon

Walking down the Artery (also known as the Dog Leg Tunnel) at Cockatoo Islands Outpost Project, you are taken aback by the colours, forms and imagery from the imaginations of some of Australias top street artists – music plays softly to various pieces within the tunnel, and the rough walls serve as a backdrop to some incredible feats of painted board.

James Jirat Patradoon is, first and foremost, an illustrator – however in recent years he has also started made his mark on the Sydney street art scene with several great murals. Out of the many pieces  down in those depths of the Artery, Patradoons most definitely caught our eye. Even given his self admission that transforming his intricately detailed works to the larger scale that street art entails can cause headaches, when we passed by his work underneath the Cockatoo Island cliff face, we didn’t notice even the slightest hint of this struggle in his work. Flowing lines, beautiful cut back shading and stark, gorgeous slashed limb colour made his piece feel radiantly effortless – completely in opposition to the amount of time and painstaking hours he puts into the larger work

Drawing on themes such as identity, legend, machismo and popular cultured imagery, this is an individual who is carving out his own slice of artistic freedom by cultivating a unique style that has massive appeal. Crossing between these worlds, from the low brow to brand orientated design, is no simple feat – and yet, the more of his work that we see, the more it becomes apparent that this is an artist who has actually found his stride between these two worlds  …

Exhibition – Laura Brown – Viscous – Brisbane

We love discovering new and cool artists, and Laura Brown fits that mold for us perfectly – her intricate, and insanely detailed, patterned illustrations have really piqued our curiosity, and we’re hoping one day to be able to see it in the flesh!

"Blonde Venus and Earl Grey Events are pleased to announce Viscous, an exhibition by Brisbane emerging artist Laura Brown.
The exhibition will present a new series of fine line drawings on paper.  The intensely intricate works command attention in a refreshingly unorthodox respect.

Disregarding customary postmodern shock-tactics, the drawings lure the viewer in by their sheer complexity of detail. Requiring a perpetual step closer, one must almost breathe the works in to truly experience them.

Laura Brown is an emerging Brisbane artist, writer, and independent curator. Whilst currently studying fine art at QCA, she has worked singularly and collaboratively on various exhibitions, publications, and projects. She has worked with numerous artist run initiatives, commercial galleries, and institutions – and will be launching a new platform in 2012. Viscous will be her first solo show."

This is one impressively multitalented lady, and we’re keen to see what else she comes up with in the future! If you’re in Brisbane, make sure to get down and check it out – click on the image below for a larger version!

Exhibition – Page Girls – Kate Macleod – Melbourne

Page Girls’ is the lovely new exhibition by Kate Macleod, tomorrow at Lamington Drive in Collingwood.

Based on her original ‘Michi Girl’ illustrations from previous illustrated books (‘Like I Give a Frock’ and ‘What On Earth Are You Wearing?’, Kate, has brought Chloe Quigley and Daniel Pollock’s fictional weather girl and fashion commentator out of the pages and into the gallery.

A whirl wind of fashion and style, the inspiration for these works is ever present and well presented by this  The Jacky Winter Group artist, specially so in the coming exhibition. The mix of placid, water colours, stream lined drawing and paper to express is perfectly balanced with the stunningly executed portraiture.

“The exhibition coincides with the auspicious occasion of Michi’s 10th birthday and features a series of redheaded beauties hand-picked by Macleod from her personal collection, complete with signature imperfections which reveal the process of metamorphosis behind the illustrations.Since her last solo show in 2009, Macleod has illustrated two books, the aforementioned What On Earth Are You Wearing?, and Sequins & Sequence (2010, ERM books). These join the shelf with her previously illustrated titles – Bird (2002, 3 Deep Design), The Cocktail (2005, Hardie Grant) and Michi Girl’s Like I Give a Frock. Her illustrations have appeared on runway invitations for Collette Dinnigan, album artwork for Clare Bowditch, on the pages of Chinese Vogue, Numero Tokyo and Australian Vogue Entertaining + Travel, as well as limited edition products for Heide Museum of Modern Art, The Australian Ballet and Third Drawer Down.”

A more perfect way to indulge in the spring season? we can’t imagine!
Kate Macleod is a popular artist who, thus far, has had a brilliant career – we’re certain that her work with Mishis weather reports will be as wonderful in the future as it will be in this show!

So get out to Collingwood, and step inside the beautiful, and gorgeously illustrated, Page Girls.

Exhibition – Mother of Millions – Makatron – Melbourne

Next week from the hands of one of Everfresh studios own, Makatron, comes an imaginative and illustrative universe on canvas ‘Mother of Millions’ with a collection of his new works, hosted by No Vacancy Gallery, Melbourne.

Makatron, who is an emerging Melbourne artist, has been around the world and back many times, plying his trade and honing his craft using a variety of media, from acrylics to aerosol and oils.

“The themes and inspirations of Makatron’s work are as eclectic as the media he employs, but they tend to reflect a few signature dichotomies. The name “Makatron” itself is a paradox, combining a prefix meaning “from” (carrying connotations of place, history, tradition, and regeneration) with a suffix that suggests the machine-like, the virtual, the promise and threat of technology

Makatron’s work, too, often pulls in opposite directions. His street art is by its nature rooted in a particular place, inscribing itself palimpsest-like as an element in a site’s history, yet it also reflects the artist’s own nomadic existence, consciously participating in a global culture with a significant extension in the virtual realm. Similarly, his work is preoccupied with the interface between humans, beasts, nature and machines, reminding us that in a digital age, human nature itself is becoming ever more machine-like.”

Ever more present in this new collection, is the artists beautiful escapist world – to which we are brought to the brink of in order to ponder it all with an objective eye, like a looking through a child’s viewfinder. These works are an illustrious combination of the organic and synthetic – or mechanical, incorporating into each piece naturalistic patterns and shapes bouncing of the humanistic qualities within.

Makaron is an artist inside an artist. His mediums alone speak of a truth, and strength, that blends well with any subject. He is more than capable of attaining artistic equilibrium on each venture, whilst keeping us, the audience’s, attention – no matter our tastes. One can only gander a guess at the title but to us it speaks volumes; the very earth-like projection tells of the mother, ‘mother earth’. And of “millions” being all things, including us and that which surrounds us.

Come and see for yourself what this diverse artist has got for us now. Don’t miss this, or you’ll be kicking yourself…to the moon and back!

Interview – Aida Sabic

Aida Sabics work is, quite simply, gorgeous. As a self taught artist, pursuing her dream of drawing and art since high school, Aida has, over the years, honed her skills in an ever progressive exploration of form and process.

We’ve been long time fans of Aida’s work here, back when we first saw her work we were completely enamoured, and now we can’t get enough. Her appreciation and attention to the expressions of the female form not-withstanding, it is her technique, and sense-driven renderings that truly makes her work stand out from the crowd.

Luckily for us, we had a chance to ask Aida about her work, and learn a bit more about her ever evolving creative journey, and, simply, what it is about these images that makes them so distinctive …

Exhibition – Kaitlin Beckett & Aramas – Melbourne

Rancho Notorious Gallery, Melbourne is bringing us to the ends of civilisation this month with “Post Apocalypse” from Just Another Agency members Aramas and Kaitlin Beckett (who we interviewed a few months ago).

“A journey into the post apocalypse of an alternate area…an anachronistic projection to a post human destruction.

What would happen if the human world suddenly ended in the 30′s? How would the world look now, would anything survive? Post Apocalypse is an exploration of that question. Humans are gone, destroyed by nuclear or biological hubris. The world that’s left is smoky and ruinous. This is an alternate future containing creatures evolving into a stylised world suddenly found empty. A story of survival, hyper evolution, mutation, glorious gas masks and deco punk themes.

KAITLIN BECKETT…Mechanical walkers driven by masked creatures walk under a glowing sky, jars are lined up to collect precious liquids and overlapping armour plates wrap around smoking viscera. The poisonous air has necessitated quick adaptations.

ARAMAS…In a world suddenly devoid of human, animals have undergone a hyper evolution. Forced to adapt to a ruined world. The results are animals new to consciousness, struggling to make sense of this strange world, the history that created it, and the future they now have to deal with. There’s new religion, old animosities, and a very human sense of curiosity and confusion. I see the bears of this world as the alternative to humans. Inheriting a past that they’re trying to understand, with some very strange results."

Kaitlin, a New Zealand native, uses mixed media of paint and illustration with airbrush, dip pens and her very own stained fingers, “lovingly embellished with iridescent pigments and metal leaf”.

“Since childhood I have had a love for the fantastic and the imaginary – I enjoy depicting the real and the unreal together, bio-mechanical juxtapositions, the unusual engaged with the everyday. The natural world, odd dreams, cryptozoology, literature and science fiction inspire me; and attachments, disguises, viscera and machinery are recurring themes in my bestiary. My characters invoke a sense of pathos, unease or humour, and I like to encourage others to invent their own narrative around my creatures” – Says Kaitlin

Aramas, Brisbane born (Melbourne situated) ethical student and self taught artist, also has an eclectic and beautiful painting style. Using creatures of animal origin and projections of current and future themes, she provokes thought and passion in her pieces.
Sometimes described as pessimistic, the translation of inner to outer in Aramas’ work is still palatable (and pretty pretty) in its execution.

These two incredibly talented ladies will be opening their minds and mediums to teach us a thing or two and we are grateful, what a combination!

Interview – Sean Morris

Sean Morris is a guy who isn’t afraid to turn over a few stones, looking under the skin of our metropolistic culture for gems of uniqueness. Not all of these gems are beautiful in the traditional sense, however the scenarios and characters that his work portrays hold their own attraction – you know, like that incident you saw on the way to work. You wanted to look away, but couldn’t, so you kept looking, torn between curiosity and the desire to avert your eyes, but settling on "wow".

It is often those feelings that his work evokes, that Sean Morris has garnered a whole swath of fans all throughout the world. It’s not only that, though – his work also carries in it elements, be they pop sensibilities, or iconography, that everyone can relate to.  Low brow in so many senses of the word, he pulls no punches – indeed, the Perth artist is at times highly characteristic of a West Australian, reflecting in his words, and work, a relaxed, no worries, whatever, ever so slightly (okay, more than slightly) piss taking attitude.

It’s for all those reasons, and many more, that we love the work of Sean Morris. When we had a chance to talk to him after his recent return from an international sojourn, we just had to dig a little deeper …
