Event Photos – Toy To The World

The other night we were able to briefly get down to the opening of the Midsummas Festival arts program – a part of which included Toy To The World. Such a cool show in general, and the TTTW portion was especially great. What was surprising, was just how many people had done Popobe bears for the charity event – over 75 of the beasties – and there were some amazing customisations.

Basically, a whole bunch of artists got a whole bunch of bears, and customised them so that they could be sold for charity. There were also some prizes involved – with Mark Lyons in 1st place, Dean Swanton in 2nd, and Kaitlin Beckett in 3rd – congrats to all, it must have been a hard job selecting them, we would have been stumped to pick only three!  The pics below dont do them great justice, but if you like any of these get down to 45 Downstairs and check it out – there is a silent auction for all of them, so just put down which one you’re interested, how much you’d pay for it, and it goes in to the draw – and some of these really deserve a good amount for the amount of time spent on their creation alone! All of those funds will then be donated to the AIDS Council, so yeah – go and do it!

Yeah, my photography skills still suck! There was also a lot of other great art down in the other exhibitions that formed a part of the show, oh – especially the foetus shaped hand bags …

(Please … bear … (okay, that was bad) with us, whilst we iron out all the bit and pieces for our new image system – there may be some fine tuning to be done!)

Exhibition – Paper People – Chia Jen & Marguerite Tierney – VIC

Two fantastic illustrators are having a show together come December – as a friend of Chias I’m totally stoked that she’s finally doing another show of her work – I’m a big fan – and though I hadn’t seen much of Marguerites work before, I’m now pretty suitably impressed by her work also. Both have had a couple of larger group shows before, but this one will be a more intimate affair of work from just the two of them.

As you know, we’re massive fans of surreal and quirky illustration here, so we’re really looking forward to this one.

Exhibition – Australian Stencil Art Prize 2010 – NSW

Exhibition – Australian Stencil Art Prize 2010 – NSW

Okay, only a few more to go (backlog is killing me today!) … and this one is for the 2010 Oz Stencil Art Prize. This prize is in its second year, and has sourced a bunch of amazing stencil artists from across Australia. Oh Really have done a great job as well from all the preview images of finding a diverse range of finalists!

From the press release:"

“There’s something magic about stencil art. It’s a little bit retro and yet it feels so new” says ASAP Director Jacinta Walpole. “Whether it’s a simple design that stays in your head, or a detailed photo-real stencil with an exhaustive number of layers. The concept is simple, and yet the art of it isn’t.”

One of the key aims of ASAP is to recognise and reward Australian stencil artists and this year’s art prize will feature 20 finalists exhibiting their stencil artworks at Oh Really Gallery.

The range of stencil artists includes a number of established artists such as Canberra’s E.L.K who recently exhibited alongside the Parisian ‘Godfather of stencil art’ Blek Le Rat through to the likes of 16 year old high school student James Ottaway in Tasmania. All artworks are for sale.

“Nearly everyone has seen a Banksy stencil” says Walpole, “But not everyone is as aware of  our own stencil artists. This art prize helps raise the profile of Australia’s talented stencil artists.”

Among the many different stencil styles, methods and mediums – the not to be missed list includes: E.L.K’s detailed stencil of singer Saul Williams, Ralf Kempken’s intricate 3D stencil of his son carved into a canvas, Robyn Cross’s quirky dog portrait ‘Where’s Leon’, Jak Rapmunds edgy urban styled ‘Life’s better in 3D’ and 23rd Key’s self portrait “Grind on my Face’  sprayed onto a skateboard.”

Exhibition – Morte – LoFi – NSW

.. and its quiet, and then its busy. Today I saw and got word of about four or five openings coming up in the next two or three weeks, so I’ll get to them in the morning – but, before I rush off to go and help out at the Collingwood Underground tonight, I wanted to get this one up as it will be opening at the LoFi Collective gallery tomorrow night!

Loving all these massive plethora of short run shows at Lo-fi – wicked idea and such a cool concept. Really have to get up there and see at least *one* show there soon …but this one, curated by Josh Roelink – very cool.

“An artistic celebration of the
other side of life.

Every single being alive on this planet right now will one day cease to exist – will one day die. The majority of those beings will not know this until it’s happening, but human beings are different – we have awareness of our eventual demise. It’s something that every human being has to deal with on a daily basis, whether through denial or acceptance, and it’s one of the driving forces in our lives despite it being camouflaged and mostly hidden away in the humdrum of modern life.

This exhibition is about the way we deal with our own mortality. Over 25 of Australia’s best tattoo and visual artists explore the world behind the thin veil.”

Sweet Streets @ BSG & Secret Wars

Sweet Streets @ BSG & Secret Wars

Last night I did the dual mission between Fitzroy and the city to go and check out both the opening of Sweet Streets @ BSG as well as to see my first Secret Wars heat.

Neither disappointed, and I got a couple not so crappy shots from both …

Sweet Streets @ BSG

So much going on with Sweet Streets at the moment! BSG opened their show last night, the Festival Film Night is on tonight with a bunch of new short films on street art, and tomorrow night is the Urban Intervention street art sculpture exhibition and art trail opening at Yarra Sculpture Gallery .. that and all the things happening at the Artists Hub in Collingwood, as well as all the workshops and the many events coming up on the program makes for a busy time.

Anyways, I got to BSG fairly early and moseyed around and checked everything out …

Secret Wars

Wow, damn that was cool. Scale and Itch battled it out last night in the first heat of the Melbourne round of Secret Wars, and it was a great show – Scale just made it past the mark and beat out Itch to go into the next round of qualifiers. I personally wouldn’t have liked to have been the judges, and as it was their votes were equally split between the two and it was left to the crowd cheer-vote to decide.

Great job by both, amazing work – congrats dudes.

Sweet Street Festival Opening Night …

Sweet Street Festival Opening Night …

Last Friday night was the opening of Sweet Streets, the 2010 Melbourne street art festival.

I was there most of the night at the Awards exhibition helping out with the show (as semi-official red-dotter and general run-around-er), and got a glimpse into all the hard work that was done in the background for both the opening, and the next two weeks of the festival. The committee really needs to be congratulated for putting it all together – it was packed out and there were so many unique and amazing pieces in it. A special yo also has to go out to the other volunteers, who all did a great job too.

As a pretty shitty critic (You may have noticed that I tend to love anyone who puts anything up on walls!) I wont comment too much on the content, but suffice to say there wasn’t anything there that I didnt like, I picked up a piece from a favorite artist, loved another massive four panel work that had awesome robotech-ish spacecraft across it (that was a little out of my price range), that Junky Projects rules, that the music was great, the crew doing the live drawing was amazing, and that all the winners of the prizes were well deserving of their kudos – as were all of the artists involved.

Theres some more on the opening over at Melbourne Art and Culture Critic – I had the chance to meet and chat to the affable and friendly Mark, whose blog I’ve been a big fan of for a while, and we took a good look at the show together before the opening, and he sums it up nicely. I’m looking forward to the next installments over the coming fortnight, starting with both the show at the BSG on Wednesday as well as the film night on Thursday … not to mention all the other events and workshops happening!

So heres photos from Friday pre-show as well as the opening, with my oh so ultra awesome camera skills haha .. its on at 1000 pound Bend for the next two weeks, so get in there and take a look!

Interview – Adrian Baldsing

Interview – Adrian Baldsing

Following up from his opening last Friday night for his solo show “Changelings” we managed to grab Perth artist Adrian Baldsings  to give us the lowdown on his show at the newly (re)minted These Days gallery.

Not being too familiar with Adrians work beyond one or two images around the net,  we were impressed to see that his bio consisted of a pretty extensive list covering numerous solo and group shows, the Kurb gallery D & K art award and numerous installation pieces around Perth – and now, though we hadn’t appreciably aware of his amazing work before, we’ll be making sure to keep an eye on it in the future.

So if you’re in Perth, make sure you get on down to These Days gallery to take a look at this body of work, and read on for the intriguing background behind his latest show …

Exhibition – On The Wall – Metro Gallery – VIC

Exhibition – On The Wall – Metro Gallery – VIC

We covered news of this show way back in July, but thought that as it  is opening this week, that we would post about it again – and include some special preview images for you that were kindly provided to us by the guys and girls at Metro Gallery.

Since it was announced, Anthony Lister, Rone and Vexta have also been added to its roster – rounding this show out to be set as one of the finest collections of Australian and international street art to be displayed here.

Cant wait!

onthewallthumb thumb Exhibition On The Wall – Metro Gallery VIC

“This show will be one the biggest collection of contemporary street art ever shown in Australia, and includes pieces by some of the most notorious internationally renowned artists including;

Blek le Rat: Blek is considered to be the godfather of stencil art, and has been producing street work for 30 years. He’s both a pioneer on the streets and in the transition to gallery work, and has inspired a generation of stencil artists. His signature Rat stencil that covered the streets of Paris in the 80’s is one of the most striking images in street art history.

Banksy: Banksy hardly needs any introduction, he’s by far the most sought after street artist in the world but has managed to stay defiantly anonymous.

Shepard Fairey: Shepard has risen from his humble roots as a teenage skater punk distributing homemade stickers via mail order and gone on to create some the most instantly recognisable visual imagery in recent art history, including the oft reproduced ‘Obey’ campaign and most noticeably the Obama ‘Hope’ image that became synonymous with the Democrat’s rise to office.

Nick Walker: English graffiti artist Nick Walker has been combining stencils with his freehand graffiti work since 1992. Nick initially turned to stencils as a means of introducing the realist elements of photography to his works, while still working with spray paint, since this point he has developed a massive international following of his work due to their wit and sense of tongue-in-cheek irony.

D*Face: Growing up in London D*Face was heavily influenced by 80’s American skate culture and punk rock aesthetics. As a teenager D*Face began incorporating these elements into highly stylised graffiti, developing a repertoire of iconic characters and imagery that are highly sought after the world over.

Swoon: Swoon’s work is indebted to both traditional craftsmanship and classic painterly technique, but her execution is entirely modern. It is this method of incorporating both age old techniques and contemporary graffiti practice that makes her work so compelling. She has contributed work to MOMA, Art Basel Miami, and the Brooklyn museum, and is widely considered to be a master contemporary print maker.

Above: Above is nomadic graffiti artist who has travelled around the world creating public art installations since 1995. His signature arrow can be found in more that 65 countries world wide, from stickers, to wheatpastes, to freehand graffiti, to wooden sculptures, Above is a force to be reckoned with.

HA HA: Melbourne’s own HA HA has risen as one of the most prominent figures in the city’s own street art movement. From his notorious Ned Kelly image that blanketed Melbourne in the early 2000’s, to his recent soft edge portraits that are comprised of up to 70 layers, HA HA has remained one of Melbourne’s most notorious street artists.

Hush: Hush is an English artist who spent a number of years in Japan working as a toy designer, his graffiti style unites these disparate worlds of Western decay, Eastern pop, and design elements. Drawing on the classic motif of the female form, Hush creates beautifully layered symphonies of colour compositions.

Stormie: Australian native Stormie has been producing street work since 1984. His dark depictions of contemporary urban life have seen him travel across the world, painting in London, Los Angeles, Berlin and Tokyo. Stormie’s personal style is entirely unique, and has earned him a cult following the world over.”

Exhibition – Busy Busy Busy – TCB – Melbourne

Got this through last night for a group show coming up at TCB Gallery. Looks to be an eclectic collection of artists from a variety of different mediums and artistic walkways – something a little different to check out and soak up!

“The exhibition title ‘busy, busy’, comes from the phrase ‘Busy, busy, busy’ which is what people of the fictional religion, ‘Bokonon’ (from the novel ‘Cats Cradle’ by Kurt Vonnegut), whisper upon witnessing an example of how interconnected everything is.

The invite image (below) is a reassertion of this idea of idea and truth lost within each other, both existing simultaneously and unconnected similarity: the image is of a false computer window featuring a seemingly abstracted pattern titled ZOOMLEARYNOSE.JPG, an image file name, yet the abstracted pattern is an actual portion of magnification from a JPG of Dr Timothy Leary’s nose, the most well known and determined advocate of the consciousness expanding drug, LSD. In reality, the image isn’t even a JPG file type image file, its a bitmap or a BMP image type.

The work within ‘busy, busy’ focuses on coincidence and connection between seemingly disparate or unrelated… ah things, you know, objects, images, subject matter, whatever dude, whatever. It is filled with irreverence against logic, a working model of the universe, albeit infinitely smaller and confined to representation via artworks in all their fallible glory.”

From the looks of it, Perth is starting to really ramp up in the next few months in terms of shows – and we had word of this one from up and coming artist Adrian Baldsing at the newly minted (previously Mixtape) These Days gallery. Don’t have too much info on this one as yet, but we’re hoping to touch base with the artist to get the low down – the work of his we’ve seen around the traps looks pretty sweet.

Exhibition – Driftwood – Oh Really Gallery – Cancelled

Just had some news from Oh Really …

“Oh Really Gallery is sad to announce that the Drift Wood Show for this thursday 9th September is Cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. We greatly appreciate the work that was sent in for the show and we are sad that we couldn’t go ahead with it.

On the bright side, Oh Really is proud that Ears is having a solo show this Saturday 11th Sept at Lo Fi Collective, 383 Bourke St, Darlinghurst.”

After two years, Oh Really Gallery have put on some damn  fine shows – and now its time for them to celebrate in style with a huge lineup of artists in their upcoming group show, Driftwood, this Thursday the 11th.

Featuring works by Beastman, Numskull, Ears, Max Berry Phibs, Ghostpatrol, Mike Bennett, Drypnz, BirdHat, Georg Whelan, Shida, Michael Hazel, Syke and more, this looks to be a diverse and stunning display of cool talent.

“September 2010 marks the second year anniversary of Oh Really Gallery, we’re celebrating a space built on high hopes, little experience and pockets full of busking money. Driftwood is a group exhibition that requires working with found wood, revisiting a time when what we discovered on the street was treasured working material. Before opening Oh Really we were drawing characters on pieces of old wood, spraying cupboard doors and giving them away for donations. ‘Driftwood’ is an ode to the busking days and the spirit of the culture we are apart of find something others discard and make it beautiful. The street provides.”

Woah. I mean, look at the roster of artists in this show – Banksy, Stormie Mills, HA HA,  Shep Fairey, Blek Le Rat, D*Face, Swoon, Nick Walker, Hush and Above – all influential and established artists, both local and international, being put up for a show of un-exhibited works. Its been rumoured for some time, and its great to finally see the details on it.

Exhibition – Ben Frost – Gorker Gallery

Sydney artist Ben Frost is putting on an exhibition at Gorker Gallery in April under the title “Confessions of a Modern Citizen”, The man has exhibited all around the world, and his colourful pop inspired urbanish pieces have garnered him fans far and wide. With this exhibition he delves a bit deeper, asking the nominally topical, if perfunctorily blasé, question “What does it mean to be a responsible and productive member of contemporary society?” – we’re really looking forward to this one.

GORKER FROST FRONT WEB 300x214 Exhibition Ben Frost Gorker Gallery

From the Gorker Website:

“In Confessions of A Model Citizen, Frost critiques the desires, obsessions and ethics of our media-saturated contemporary society in a series of vibrant new artworks.

Through his own anecdotal and often brash experiences of life in Sydney and abroad, he explores our attempts at cultural
belonging and resulting disconnection from a world where lifestyle and expectations are bought and sold on the shelves of Ikea and
‘advertainment’ television.

The confronting and often controversial artist Ben Frost uses a ‘collage’ style of unlikely juxtapositions throughout his paintings, creating complex mash-ups of popular culture. Co-Founder of the online portal stupidkrap.com, guest speaker at the Semi-Permanent & AG IDEAS conferences in ’08 and a featured artist in The Apprentice Australia ’09, Frost currently lives in Sydney operating ‘Worlds End Studio’ in Surry Hills. Ben Frost has exhibited extensively both in Australia and Internationally, including solo shows in London, New York and San Francisco, as well as group shows in Beijing, Amsterdam, Berlin and Singapore and has been featured in countess magazines and newspapers including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Australian Art Collector, Empty, Monster Children, Sydney Morning Herald and was a contributing illustrator to Black + White Magazine for over three years.”
