Invurt Rough Guide – Outpost Project

Earlier this year, we heard about an ambitious project to transform Sydneys Harbours Cockatoo Island into a mecca of street art. When we first heard it, it seemed a long way away, and we weren’t sure exactly what it entailed. Over time, we started learning more, and getting an idea as to what it would encompass – and it was bigger, bolder, and more jam packed with awesome than we ever imagined. The Outpost project will be a showcase of Australian street art, and international street art, that outweighs anything that has previously been seen in Australasia.

Over the next five weeks, we’ll be focusing on the Outpost Project for our editorial content – we’ll still have our regular blogs, but we’ll also be running a string of content as we document whats going on up at the island. We’ve also been working with the wonderful ArtSeries Hotels to help coordinate several forums and artist showcases as well, and there will be all kinds of posts around those. The entire team here has been gearing up for this for the last few months – its here, and we’re totally amped!

So, this is your rough guide to the event – from here will be links to articles on each event, interviews, live blogging, photos and all the rest. Use this as your feed, or just keep reading as you normally would to keep on track – all the Outpost content will be tagged so you can always just check the tag feed … Outpost will be a ground breaking event in the Australian street art legacy – we can’t wait, because its going to be mad – so read on, bookmark this article, and keep checking back here for new content links.

This is only a guide, and we’ll keep it as up to date as possible, so if in doubt, please refer to the Outpost Project website.

Outpost Project – Oi! You! Collection – Feat. Banksy – Sydney

Yes you heard right. The Big Brand, The Can’t-Stop Can, The Unseen Man. Banksy!… and Swoon! Faile! David Choe and more!

“The Bad Artists Imitate, The Great Artists Steal” and Banksy surely steals…the stage, where ever he goes!

Now his work comes to Cockatoo Island for Outpost Project, along with many other fine fresh street artists, in the form of the “Oi You! Collection" (Co-Owned by George Shaw).

This will be the first time the Oi You! Collection has been outside of New Zealand. With twenty three pieces adorning the makeshift walls on the island  Banksy and a whole heap of other talented artists – Swoon, David Choe, Os Gemeos and more present highly original and rare pieces of artwork in this extraordinary collection.

What an exhibition it’ll be too – so many names and so much experience and differing styles, it should be interesting to see it all up together. With mediums ranging from photography and film to stencil, paste-ups and graffiti, this exhibition is a plentiful bounty.

This is one of those moments you bless yourself for being here in Oz, and thank the Gods of Street Art for sending these seminal artists works to Sydney!!!

Press Mill Wednesdays – August 2011

Back again after a massively hectic month of article writing and editing! August has been an interesting month in the news, so here is your wrap up of all (most all!) things media related in Oz and New Zealand …

Now, we certainly don’t condone illegal acts of vandalism here, but we will certainly condemn idiotic laws that are out of touch with modern culture. There was also a whole lot in the press in the last month about a whole bunch of stupid laws, and people being forced to pay ridiculous amounts in damages. It would be nice to see full cost breakdowns as to where all these officials get their estimates when they are claiming "it caused $100k in damages." I bet in reality it costs a hell of a lot less than what is purported.

Regardless, I still think the Queen looks like a Skeksi.

Interview – David Hurlston – NGV

CDH, a Melbourne street artist, recently sat down with the NGVs David Hurlston on behalf of Invurt, to talk about street art, as well as the new NGV Studio in Melbournes Federation Square  …

As the acting Senior Curator of Australian Art at the National Gallery for Victoria, David Hurlston is the man responsible for the entirety of the Australian Art Collection in Victoria. The collection at the NGV includes the first non-indigenous Australian works, all the way through to contemporary art. On top of this, David has also recently taken on co-supervision of the newly opened NGV Studio in Federation Square (with Deborah Ratliff),

You may have heard of this space in recent months, and the very first exhibition in the new studio space is a month long residency by Melbournes Everfresh crew. Everfresh competed against three other crews (AWOL, SDM and the Formula One crew), by painting a 25m long wall inside the space. Votes were then cast via new media (Twitter and Facebook) to determine who would occupy the space –with the Everfresh crew taking out the honours.

David is a champion for street art in Melbourne; someone who is helping it to be recognized as a legitimate part of our culture and true art movement. He’s also a really nice guy – halfway through the conversation that I had with David last week, an elderly Chinese man came up and asked for assistance sending a text message – and David patiently helped him for a good 15 minutes …

Event – Contemporary & Street Art Auction – Melbourne

The folks from Sydneys Arthouse Auctions will be holding an auction of contemporary and street art work this weekend, Sunday the 3rd of July.

From the artists who are listed, there is definitely something for everyone – and more than likely something for pretty much everyone’s price range as well. Alongside some of the big and great (like Damien Hirst and Brett Whiteley), there are some fantastic names that we love seeing alongside them – artists like Heesco, Be Free, Suki, Phibs, HaHa, Rone and more …

Here’s a bit of a bio and media release about Arthouse Auctions if you haven’t heard of them just yet:

“Arthouse Auctions are pioneering “off-the-wall” or street art auctions in Australia – showcasing some of the hottest proponents of this booming genre in a specialised auction from 1pm this Sunday at Ormond Hall, Prahran.

The move comes as Australia enters an exciting transition point where street art, once labelled illegal, is now being hung in galleries and finding it’s way into many people’s homes. Arthouse Auctions art specialist Giovanna Fragomeli said whether it is referred to as low-brow, neo-pop, pop-surrealism or new-brow, there is no escaping the fact that street inspired forms of expression are comfortably finding a footing in galleries and, ultimately, the auction system where astute investors are vying to increase their collections.

“Local artists such as HaHa, Rone, Ben Frost and Vexta (their street names), among the resident collection and exhibition ‘Space Invaders’ at the National Gallery of Australia will be featured in this ground-breaking Arthouse Auctions Street Art auction,” she said. “These artists are amongst the most prolific in Australia’s street art scene – not just because their art speaks of that ‘hard edged’ aesthetic, but also due to images presented with the requisite combination of humour, criticism and irony.”

Street Art is playful, edgy, clever, satirical and political, and there is no denying that it has significantly altered Australian visual culture and has announced the arrival of a new generation of contemporary artists. According to HaHa, one of the most prolific of Australia’s street art practitioners, artists who work on the streets are the ‘bushrangers of the 21st century’; a comparison that reflects the rebelliousness that is at the centre of this new visual culture. “

That serious auction houses like this are finally getting behind the street and urban art scene here in Australia, and looking at presenting work from emerging and artists, as well as those whom are established and “big named” is a wonderful thing – so we’ll be heading down there (okay, its in Prahran so we don’t have to head too far!) to check it all out, and, if you’re in Melbourne, you should too!

Interview – Max Berry

Interview – Max Berry

We’ve been seeing Max’s work pop up in various shows with more and more frequency in recent times – and from what we’re seeing, we cant help but want something to put up on our wall.

His most recent work, derived from a multitude of influences, often heavily so in the direction of the fantastical, conveys a hell of a lot of compacted imagery and symbolism into what are often smaller scale, semi-illustrative paintings – its iconographic, often fun, art, and we always feel the need to construct our own internal narratives for each piece whenever we see them.

We were really glad to be able to catch up with Max in the lead up to his coming group show, Microcosm, with Phibs, Beastman and Creepy – and to find out more about the ongoing visual narrative behind his works  …

Looks like Metro is taking some of the works from their On The Wall show over to the ACT as a showcase in conjunction with the currently running Space Invaders show – if you’re in Canberra, you need to go see this – I went to the showing here at the Metro Gallery and it was one of the coolest shows I’ve been to this year.

Nice work, Metro.

Exhibition – On The Wall – Metro Gallery – VIC

We covered news of this show way back in July, but thought that as it  is opening this week, that we would post about it again – and include some special preview images for you that were kindly provided to us by the guys and girls at Metro Gallery.

Since it was announced, Anthony Lister, Rone and Vexta have also been added to its roster – rounding this show out to be set as one of the finest collections of Australian and international street art to be displayed here.

Cant wait!

“This show will be one the biggest collection of contemporary street art ever shown in Australia, and includes pieces by some of the most notorious internationally renowned artists including;

Blek le Rat: Blek is considered to be the godfather of stencil art, and has been producing street work for 30 years. He’s both a pioneer on the streets and in the transition to gallery work, and has inspired a generation of stencil artists. His signature Rat stencil that covered the streets of Paris in the 80’s is one of the most striking images in street art history.

Banksy: Banksy hardly needs any introduction, he’s by far the most sought after street artist in the world but has managed to stay defiantly anonymous.

Shepard Fairey: Shepard has risen from his humble roots as a teenage skater punk distributing homemade stickers via mail order and gone on to create some the most instantly recognisable visual imagery in recent art history, including the oft reproduced ‘Obey’ campaign and most noticeably the Obama ‘Hope’ image that became synonymous with the Democrat’s rise to office.

Nick Walker: English graffiti artist Nick Walker has been combining stencils with his freehand graffiti work since 1992. Nick initially turned to stencils as a means of introducing the realist elements of photography to his works, while still working with spray paint, since this point he has developed a massive international following of his work due to their wit and sense of tongue-in-cheek irony.

D*Face: Growing up in London D*Face was heavily influenced by 80’s American skate culture and punk rock aesthetics. As a teenager D*Face began incorporating these elements into highly stylised graffiti, developing a repertoire of iconic characters and imagery that are highly sought after the world over.

Swoon: Swoon’s work is indebted to both traditional craftsmanship and classic painterly technique, but her execution is entirely modern. It is this method of incorporating both age old techniques and contemporary graffiti practice that makes her work so compelling. She has contributed work to MOMA, Art Basel Miami, and the Brooklyn museum, and is widely considered to be a master contemporary print maker.

Above: Above is nomadic graffiti artist who has travelled around the world creating public art installations since 1995. His signature arrow can be found in more that 65 countries world wide, from stickers, to wheatpastes, to freehand graffiti, to wooden sculptures, Above is a force to be reckoned with.

HA HA: Melbourne’s own HA HA has risen as one of the most prominent figures in the city’s own street art movement. From his notorious Ned Kelly image that blanketed Melbourne in the early 2000’s, to his recent soft edge portraits that are comprised of up to 70 layers, HA HA has remained one of Melbourne’s most notorious street artists.

Hush: Hush is an English artist who spent a number of years in Japan working as a toy designer, his graffiti style unites these disparate worlds of Western decay, Eastern pop, and design elements. Drawing on the classic motif of the female form, Hush creates beautifully layered symphonies of colour compositions.

Stormie: Australian native Stormie has been producing street work since 1984. His dark depictions of contemporary urban life have seen him travel across the world, painting in London, Los Angeles, Berlin and Tokyo. Stormie’s personal style is entirely unique, and has earned him a cult following the world over.”
