Outpost Project – NEXT Exhibition – Sydney

What is painted is external, what is inspired is internal, what is worn is the package it all comes in, you are what you paint, and you are what you wear. The threads that adorn graffiti artists, skaters and street artists today are as well documented as they themselves are, and in turn emulate as much freshness and style as the art they create.

A world first at Outpost Project, curated by Eddie Zammit and presented by T-world and aMBUSH Gallery, comes this monumental T-shirt graphics exhibition – the likes of which have never been seen in Australiasia.

“Within the steep steel structure and brick-walled confines of the "Heavy Machine Shop" lies NEXT, nestled in a core of cotton.”

Over twenty local and international artists and designers from all corners of the market will be interpreting their envisioned future of T-shirt graphics, by creating original and one-off T-shirt art. This plus a display of over 1,500 T-shirts from the dopest brands around town flauntin their style? Holy …

“Throughout its evolution, street art has taken on many forms and mediums. However, it is arguably street fashion in which it finds its most natural progression from the static streets into walking works of art. NEXT is an excision and examination into the heart and soul of one of the most influential and vibrant subcultures – T-shirt culture.

With the impressive credentials of being founder, owner and editor of the world’s only T-shirt journal, Eddie Zammit, reflecting his devout passion for the T-shirt medium (for the record, he owns 2,300 plus T-shirts personally…), the exhibition is in capable hands. This is the physical culmination of the subculture he loves. "Let’s not dismiss street wear as a T-shirt category, let’s explore its evolution," Zammit says. This exhibition is at once a retrospective and gaze to the future: a time capsule, of sorts, for the humble T-shirt and its marriage to Street Art.”

If you are a dude or dudette who love them some sweet street duds then this is for you – and it looks incredible.

Event & Exhibition – I Used To Skate Once #7 – QLD

How many out there used to skate once upon a time, but don’t really do it anymore, for whatever reason?

That’s the theme behind this amazing upcoming group show in Brisbane at the end of the month, in a grand celebration of past skating adventures. For the past seven years the guys at The Outpost have been putting on these events in celebration of all the creative entities and individuals that they love, and each one gets bigger and better -  and this one coming up looks grand. The line up of bands and music looks grand, but the list of artists displaying work looks phenomenal.

Event – Penthouse Mouse – VIC

Event – Penthouse Mouse – VIC

This one is a little off the track for us, but its worth a mention nonetheless as it is one of those unique events that gives a more than decent shot at bridging the whole public/commercial/underground gap, plus its aim is to helps promote young designers – and we’re all over that shiz. Sure, its not really low brow or whatever, but who cares? Its one of those events amongst the Loreal Melbourne Fashion Week that tries to do something a bit different, and to present work in a different way in order to engage the public in creative ways. With a great artist contingent, fashion designers and a whole bunch of other up and coming talent, it’d probably be a little remiss of us not to cover it for those who have a keen interest in the design and fashion side of things.

It will include a whole bunch of art installations, as mentioned, and we’ve heard nothing but good things about it all from previous years! The media release pretty much sums it all up -

“Penthouse Mouse (PHM). A temporary fashion, arts and events space that affords emerging designers and artists the opportunity to showcase their current work during the L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival (LMFF). More than just a shopping location, Penthouse Mouse brings together installation artworks, parties, live photo shoots and other random happenings in a collaborative, freeform and innovative format.

Hosting the launch of the LMFF Cultural Program of which PHM is the queen, this year will see the Mouse have its biggest launch event yet. Now in its fifth year PHM has become known for the place to learn of new trends and forge new collaborations by bringing artists, designers and Melbourne’s most discerning crowds together in one space for a week of varied events each as anticipated as the next. Throw into the mix, beers from the Coopers 62 Bar and a Lavazza Cafe for cheeky espresso cocktails or a latte while you shop and you might just be
tempted to move in for the week.

Designers in 2011 include PHM veterans; Leonard Street, Trimapee, Limedrop, Thom Finch, Alexi Freeman and Mecurialist along with welcome additions Maytide, Jolet, Upper Left Arm, Above, Flocks and more to be announced. Not forgetting that every outfit needs a little something extra, a central boutique environment will be dedicated to PHM’s much loved accessory design contingent. PHM will open on March 13‐14 specifically for the perusal and shopping of coveted AW collections from this talented design pack.

Artists involved in exhibition include Danae Valenza, Volker Haug, Matsuri Yamana, Ben Davis, Kirsty Hulm, Sam Stewart, Joel Zika, Juliet Rowe, Hidden Suns, Albert Comper, Sam Woud, Laura Woodward, Belinda Chen, Andrew Kupresanin, Dawn Tan, Justine Rouse and Kirstin McIver.

Heres a small preview of some of the cool work from the artists involved – but find more on the PHM website.

Exhibition – Morte – LoFi – NSW

Exhibition – Morte – LoFi – NSW

.. and its quiet, and then its busy. Today I saw and got word of about four or five openings coming up in the next two or three weeks, so I’ll get to them in the morning – but, before I rush off to go and help out at the Collingwood Underground tonight, I wanted to get this one up as it will be opening at the LoFi Collective gallery tomorrow night!

Loving all these massive plethora of short run shows at Lo-fi – wicked idea and such a cool concept. Really have to get up there and see at least *one* show there soon …but this one, curated by Josh Roelink – very cool.

“An artistic celebration of the
other side of life.

Every single being alive on this planet right now will one day cease to exist – will one day die. The majority of those beings will not know this until it’s happening, but human beings are different – we have awareness of our eventual demise. It’s something that every human being has to deal with on a daily basis, whether through denial or acceptance, and it’s one of the driving forces in our lives despite it being camouflaged and mostly hidden away in the humdrum of modern life.

This exhibition is about the way we deal with our own mortality. Over 25 of Australia’s best tattoo and visual artists explore the world behind the thin veil.”

Weekly blog – Bagels, Coffee and Diatribes

So after having been online for a year, and having only posted articles up from all the archives, I’ve decided its time to start writing new material in this blog, and actually using it for the purpose it was originally intended – to act as a conduit for looking at music and art here in Australia and around the world ..
