Event – Oh Really Fundraiser Gig – NSW

Event – Oh Really Fundraiser Gig – NSW

This looks like a cool gig, and a fun one at that – plus, all for a good cause in helping to sustain one of the venues that plays an integral part of Sydneys street art community!

“Oh Really Gallery is a key independent creative space in the inner west of Sydney. Although we’ve had successes over the last 2 years, Oh Really’s operating budget is still smaller than a hippie’s coin purse and it needs your help for 2011 to survive.

Oh Really has brought you exhibitions of some of Sydney’s hottest talent’s like Phibs, Ears, Mini Graff, Teazer and Beastman. Interstate artists like Drewfunk(Melb), Last Chance Studios(Perth), and Simon Degroot(Bris), as well as Drypnz(NZ) and Mica Still(NZ) solo shows for the first time in Australia.

Oh Really has been moving forward to keep things fresh over the last 2 years like our infamous 32hr Artist Lock in’s in the gallery or Culture Jam, our live music and live painting nights that blend art and music or spoken word, and has attracted musicians like Rai Thistlethyawte ‘Thirsty Merc’, MC Tuka ‘Thundamentals’, Kieran Day ‘Traps’ and Boku, a Tibetian Throat Singer.

This Thursday 16th Dec, Oh Really is having a fundraiser event in the style of Culture Jam with live music by Ears and Jack Prest plus a freestyle session later in the night, live painting by Joe Purtle and Yoko, as well as donated paintings by sydney artists Ears, SMC3, Adam Parquette, Vars, Syke and more.

All proceeds from sales will go towards keeping Oh Really operating into 2011. We will also be taking donations at the event, or for you international and inter-state people you can donate through paypal on our website.

Oh Really needs to raise funds to keep the exhibitions and live events flowing into the sydney creative blood stream for 2011. So all you Oh Really foot soldiers out there, spread the word, let’s keep Oh Really going.”

Lunch Adventure – Secret Wars & Grill’d – Burger Love

Well, I just got back from a cool little lunchtime adventure – I headed down to Southbank, where Secret Wars and Grill’d were doing a launch for the new Grill’d Airstream. They had Drewfunk and Scale battling it live, and free burgers for 90 minutes, all in the name of Burger Love.

Event Review – Tiger Translate Melbourne

In my totally hung over state and after a busy afternoon (I may have possibly had one too many the night before whilst watching my friends band the Freak Technique), I headed down on the tram on Sunday evening to check out the inaugural Melbourne Tiger Translate event.

So I decided to put a few of my thoughts down into a small review – again, excuse my point and shoot pics – I’m not exactly what you’d call the worlds best photographer haha … enjoy …

Event – Westsyde Connection Art Sale – NSW

Event – Westsyde Connection Art Sale – NSW

Westsyde Connection in Sydneys Dulwich Hills are holding a massive xmas art sale come the 4th of December – and they are also “calling on any artists who want to put their work in the sale to drop it by the shop the week before with a retail price and a sale price.“

So if you’re in Sydney, and have some art handy that you want to put in to the event, just contact them at the shop or via their website – and get down there on the day to snap up some great bargains and works.

Also, on another note, and if you haven’t read our Friday wraps,  Westsyde Connection are currently under attack by the Salvation Army, who are taking them to the High Court over a beautiful piece of artwork out the back of their shop. They have set up a website to help them save the artwork as well as to draw attention to the issue. I’ve said it before, but I’ll say it again – this does nothing for the Salvation Armys image – they are supposed to support the community, and the areas creative youth, not attack them for expressing themselves through art – its an shockingly appalling state of affairs and the local head of the Salvos in the area, Captain Ian Spall, should be ashamed of himself for taking it this far. Go sign the petition – or make a donation to help them cover their legal costs in the upcoming battle.

Mini Reviews – A3 Small Art Show – Cardbordia – Toy To The World

I’m totally art-ed out from the past week, with way too much happening! I did manage to get to a few openings and events though, namely the A3 Small Art show, Toy To The World and the Cardbordia show that I was part of with a bunch of other cool crew …  but I’m also looking forward to seeing the other shows whose openings I missed on Friday over the next few days – namely Kami & Sasu, about:blank and Scottie “Bonsai” Neoh’s one at Fed Square …

Anyways, I got a few shots along the way (I’m a crappy photographer so don’t hold it against me if they aren’t that shit-hot =P, so I figured I’d do a couple mini-reviews and post up a few of them up …

Exhibition – Cardbordia – At Large Gallery – VIC

Exhibition – Cardbordia – At Large Gallery – VIC

So, next week some friends and I will be getting together @ At Large Gallery in Northcote for a bit of fun to do a pop-up-installation-style show, in a big mash-up collaborative effort – and we’d like to invite you all along to check it out.

“At Large Gallery & Invurt present Cardbordia, a collective excursion into a variety of cardboard inspired installations, works, prints, paste-ups, cutouts, collaborative art, projections and soundscapes. In the lead up to the show, the Carbordia crew will spend the week  transforming the At Large gallery into a celebration of carded goodness, with an array of urban focused styles and mediums!!

Featuring Enix Hart, Mishap, Sim2, Rachee Renee, Magnus McTavish, Fletcher Andersen, Danarchy, the creative sounds of Fergus, and proudly sponsored by Visy Cardboard, the show will be an amazing Three Dimensional Feast of the Senses, and one of the first ever Installation Style Shows @ At Large Gallery.

Pretty much, we are going to go apeshit with a truckload of cardboard – and its going to be funky as –

cardbordiaMedium thumb Exhibition – Cardbordia – At Large Gallery VIC

Who:

Enix Hart - bringing influences from a plethora of different disciplines including 3D Modeling and Animation, Graphic Design and Mixed Media, Enix Hart strives to stretch new styles constantly. Having fallen in love with spray paint in 2008 Enix plans to cover the world in delicious colours that can be chewed up and savoured by those who have the hunger.

Mishap & Simz – Simz, or Sim2, originally from WA, is nowadays best known for decorating walls around Melbourne with his macabre science-fiction and mechanical style. In contrast, Mishap’s strategically placed sultry feminine characters in and around inner city laneways have also been turning heads.  The creative pair have been quickly paving their way in the street art scene since joining forces over three years ago. While continuing to add to their repertoire of exhibitions, Mishap and Simz are also focused these days on collaborative murals and the running of a gallery space that promotes artists of a similar mindset.

Rachee Renee – Rachee Renee has been brightening streets, alleyways, drains, warehouses, galleries, bars and clubs with stencils, characters and killer ladies throughout Melbourne and internationally under numerous aliases for at least the last decade! She would have been recently seen painting up a storm at Sketch City events (www.sketchcity.com.au), creating artwork peeps can dance to! Rachee’s style is influenced by pop surrealism, street art and all kinds of Japanese kitsch, creating cute and colourful art thats just a little provocative. Website: http://www.racheerenee.com

Magnus McTavish – Growing up in Brisbane’s wild West End, and now residing in Melbourne, Magnus has a long and prolific association with the core artists of the Brisbane street art scene, working alongside pioneers across generations of the culture.

“Magnus McTavish has never worked in Magic, But has a background in fine arts, also Known for schooling such legends as Ksino and AnThony Lister. Also Has Been practicing for many than 15 years. No more Of the Old, In with the Black. Appropriation of space is one of his main stays. Work by the Artist Is now also on Display this year, at the National Gallery Of Australia Canberra. As well As a Protest Mural at the Supreme Court Of Brisbane. You can view many of his works throughout time without worrying what he is doing in Magic… you may view his latest books In this next exhibition.”

Fletcher Andersen – Having moved to Melbourne in the not so distant past, and with a life long passion for street art, and a hands on passion since his days spent bombing Perth in the early 90s, Fletch has now immersed himself in Melbournes thriving art culture. Following his successful first solo show back in September, his love of all things robotic, science fiction and organic has engendered a unique style that he continues to push in new directions. Fletch is also the editor and writer of Invurt – a blogzine with the sole aim of promoting established and emerging Australian urban, street, illustrative and low brow artists – all that which he loves – to a wider local, national, and international audience. Website:http://www.irikanji.com/ & http://www.invurt.com/

Danarchy – this obnoxious artful-dodger, punka-basta – or whatever stereotype fits – is often found using his artistic flair as a way to keep his head above water, and, sometimes, out of trouble. In his eternal quest for reason and answers, he divulges his creativity and self expression with a consistent and endless questioning of the world, and the various vestiges of Authority around us.

Fergus - No stranger to Melbournes electronic music scene, and with a plethora of releases on some of the worlds top labels, DJ Fergus is the sound sculptor for the Cardbordia crew. As a producer, DJ and part of the emerging power-house band that is the Freak Technique, Fergus will lends his diverse audio skills in bringing the visual diversity of Cardbordia to life with a customised audioscape prepared specially for the show. http://soundcloud.com/fergus01

Exhibition – Australian Stencil Art Prize 2010 – NSW

Exhibition – Australian Stencil Art Prize 2010 – NSW

Okay, only a few more to go (backlog is killing me today!) … and this one is for the 2010 Oz Stencil Art Prize. This prize is in its second year, and has sourced a bunch of amazing stencil artists from across Australia. Oh Really have done a great job as well from all the preview images of finding a diverse range of finalists!

From the press release:"

“There’s something magic about stencil art. It’s a little bit retro and yet it feels so new” says ASAP Director Jacinta Walpole. “Whether it’s a simple design that stays in your head, or a detailed photo-real stencil with an exhaustive number of layers. The concept is simple, and yet the art of it isn’t.”

One of the key aims of ASAP is to recognise and reward Australian stencil artists and this year’s art prize will feature 20 finalists exhibiting their stencil artworks at Oh Really Gallery.

The range of stencil artists includes a number of established artists such as Canberra’s E.L.K who recently exhibited alongside the Parisian ‘Godfather of stencil art’ Blek Le Rat through to the likes of 16 year old high school student James Ottaway in Tasmania. All artworks are for sale.

“Nearly everyone has seen a Banksy stencil” says Walpole, “But not everyone is as aware of  our own stencil artists. This art prize helps raise the profile of Australia’s talented stencil artists.”

Among the many different stencil styles, methods and mediums – the not to be missed list includes: E.L.K’s detailed stencil of singer Saul Williams, Ralf Kempken’s intricate 3D stencil of his son carved into a canvas, Robyn Cross’s quirky dog portrait ‘Where’s Leon’, Jak Rapmunds edgy urban styled ‘Life’s better in 3D’ and 23rd Key’s self portrait “Grind on my Face’  sprayed onto a skateboard.”

Exhibition – Changing Lanes Festival Exhibition – aMBUSH Gallery – NSW

The guys at aMBUSH are a damn hard working bunch, and are always putting on quality shows – and their shows that they do in conjunction with other areas of the wider street and urban art community are always up there in the coolness stakes.

Their work with the Changing lanes festival in Newtown was great, and now they are presenting a final exhibition in conjunction with the festival to present a bunch of works done throughout the festival for auction – yep, very cool.

“The very first Changing Lanes Festival saw the streets of Newtown spring to life with people traveling from all corners of Sydney to dive head first into the artistic, musical and creative output of our city. Sydney’s street art culture was celebrated through the creation of a paneled mural, completed by local street artists Max Berry, SMC[3], EARS, Gem Lark and Vars.

On Thursday the 4th of November MAPS Entertainment will present a final exhibition of the Changing Lanes paneled mural at aMBUSH Gallery. Members of the public will be able to bid in a silent auction, with all proceeds going to FBi Radio. Additional works from artists Max Berry, SMC[3], EARS, Gem Lark, Vars, HOUL, Syke, Chad Drake, Skel, Tulsi, Bennett and Sprinkles will also be exhibited and available for purchase. Event – Toy To The World – VIC

Event – Toy To The World – VIC

A friend sent this to me last night, and I immediately thought it was a damn cool idea for a charity gig.

They’re looking up to 150 people to register to be involved, each will paint a vinyl bear which will then be sold off with the proceeds going towards – it’s Section 8, so all the cool things that go along with that mad ass container bar apply – tunes, beverages, art and cool company.

“PencilNeck Productions presents Toy to the World. A two part event, part design workshop, part exhibition, the event will be a collaboration of Melbourne’s many graphic artists, street/graffiti artist, designers and illustrators working to each transform a vinyl toy bear into a piece of unique art exploring many themes especially those surrounding World AIDS Day 2010 and its theme “Make Change, Not Discrimination”.

Kicking off from 11am on Saturday 20th November 2010 the first part of the event, “Toy to the World: Design Day”, is set to bring Melbourne’s creative community together at Section 8 container bar in Tattersalls Lane, just off Lonsdale Street in the heart of the CBD. Eckersley’s arts and crafts proudly supply an array of spray paint; paint markers and glue for artists to get imaginative with and vinyl toy manufacturer Popobe have provided 150 blank bears as canvases for the artists to play with. Section 8’s bar open for a bevvy or two and the S8 crew will present some huge RnB and HipHop tunes from their resident DJs, so those less artistically inclined can still come along kick back with a drink, some hot tunes and watch the magic happen.

Artists should pre-register for the event by sending an email with their name and contact number to pencilneck@live.com.au, they’ll be sent a template of the Popobe bear so they can get the creative juices flowing and plan out their design, they’ll also be asked to choose a preferred time slot: 10 artists per hour, every hour, 11am-7pm, first in best dressed. The designs will be judged by a panel of special guest artists and designers, the top three walking away with an assortment of awesome prizes. Registration is free.

The goods keep coming; the designs will be collected through the day for part two of the event, Toy to the World: Exhibition, giving the artists a chance to have their works exhibited. Part of the Midsumma 2011 festival, the exhibition will open the 17th January and close 6th February at 45downstairs the premier art space in Midsumma’s Queer City. A silent auction will run the length of the exhibition to raise funds the Victorian AIDS Council. All funds raised from the sale of works go to the VAC. Artists will be offered the opportunity to pre-purchase their design so they can hang onto it if they’d like it not to be auctioned.”

Event – The Chopping Block – WA

Cool traders and general great supporters of art and artists alike, the Butchers Shop has teamed up with the Norfolk Lanes Youth Festival in November to bring what looks like a great little group art exhibition to the streets of Fremantle:

“The Norfolk Lanes Youth Festival is in it’s second year and is part of the bigger Fremantle Festival. Activities on the day include live graffiti, live music, skating demonstrations, market stalls and heaps more. Have a look at their Facebook page or Myspace for locations and the complete lineup.

We will be located in the big marquee on Essex Street, come early to have a gander and perhaps pick up a piece of art to take home.

We have selected fourteen extremely talented, young, local artists to participate, some names you probably recognise, and some equally awesome first-time-exhibitors.”
