Interview – Boogs + Illya

From humble beginning several years ago, In The Mix has now spread itself across the Australian continent with force. Each year ITM holds a regular “voted by the people” Top 50 list of DJs. It is from this list that they have chosen two of Oz’s finest to represent them on their very first outing into the recording realm, with the release in early August of the very first ITM 50 mix CD. The temptation to place previously released, big name DJ’s on their initial lineup must have been somewhat difficult to withstand, but by choosing Sydneys DJ Illya and Melbournes DJ Boogs to headline the album, the ITM crew have stayed true to their innovative nature.

Interview – John Ferris + Cosmic Gate

When John Ferris was in Perth several weeks ago for Ministry of Sounds Hard NRG gig over Easter, he could hardly contain his praise “It was absolutely fantastic. Describing his last time here as slightly disappointing, he remarks, “This time around it seemed to go off. Last time I felt the crowd got a bit bored, and by the time I came along, a shitload of people disappeared.”

Interview – Aquasky

Things have come full circle for the Aquasky lads who, in 2000, startled the breakbeat world with their groundbreaking track, 777. At the time, the Bournemouth trio were better known for their d’n’b outings, and Kieron admits that breaks fell somewhat into their laps by surprise. “It was funny cos we just wrote them tunes, 777 and Shure Shot….we had no clue about the breaks scene …we just wanted to do some stuff and made it up …that’s how the tunes came out …we didn’t listen to anything any one else was doing so it was kinda accidental really – but fun too…no rules! We just took all the production stuff we knew from making d’n’b and threw it in there …and [we] came up with a new sound, I think.”

Interview – Kenny Ken

It’s late in the afternoon, and Kenny Ken is in front of his computer, sending and receiving tracks on the ‘net, preparing for his upcoming Australian tour. “When you’ve djed as much as I have, you tend to not practice as much,” he jokes. Yet Kenny has spent the past week doing exactly that, sifting through his record room looking for tunes and preparing an arsenal of dub-plates, almost fourteen in all, to compliment the older style Ragga tracks that he will be playing whilst here in Perth. “I have a bunch of stuff,” he remarks, “a good few classics as well – some thing that people might not have heard back then.”

Interview – Dave Lea

After twelve years of DJing and with a multitude of album releases under his belt, Dave Lea has every reason to be enthusiastic about his upcoming Australian tour. Having just returned from a successful yet cold-weather challenged tour of the U.S, the affable man behind one of club-lands most admired production companies is looking forward to once again bringing his version of the gospel of electronica to Perth fans.

Interview – Matt Darey

It’s 1am in the morning, London time, and one of the biggest names in modern trance, Matt Darey, is pulling another all nighter. Having been stuck in the studio a lot within recent months, one gets the impression that some fundamental shifts in trance may be on the near horizon. These shifts may have to do with the fact that Darey is at an exciting and somewhat possibly daunting stage of his career. Having taken a two year hiatus from a scene that he had become somewhat disenchanted with, he humbly admits that although it has been a hard task getting back into the swing of the industry, it is at the same time, very refreshing to come back with a new perspective – “Music used to be my life, totally,” he remarks somewhat laconically. “Its becoming more like that again.”
