Event – Without Walls Volume 3 – Sydney

This week aMBUSH Gallery presents Without Walls Vol.3, the third edition in this wonderfully interactive group show. As with the previous installments, Volume 3 will be breaking barriers, reinventing the perception of street art and design via collaboration and interaction.

Without Walls “…Destroys this conception by reformatting local artists works into limited edition t-shirts. This interactive approach brings the artworks beyond the walls of the gallery, and giving it a limitless birth directly onto the streets of Sydney.”

Artists Mark Aisweiler, Alex Lahours, Elle Green, Mia Oatley and Sprinkles, collaborating with design stylist Jessica Bellef and DJ Maceyalan providing the Oldskool Hip Hop and Funk beats, Without Walls will definitely put on a spectacular show, one where you can view, review and take off afterwards wearing one of the works.

Event – In The Cut Vol.3 – Melbourne

As part of the Melbourne Fringe Festival, In The Cut – Vol.3 bring together the best of both worlds this October when (the aptly named) Good Times Studios host a mega event that will have North-side peeps adoring the walls and shaking the floors all in synchronised harmony.

Bringing “the laneways of Fitzroy to the underground of Carlton” the one night only exhibition/live music event will showcase some of Melbourne’s best, brightest, funky and fresh including artists; Deb, Braddock, Kaitlin Beckett, Junky Projects, Phoenix, 23rd Key, Flake, Lazerfist, Nelson Nokela and beats provided by The Delta Riggs, The High Society, Ishu & Class A, One/Six, Durban Poison and Van Grizzly!

“In the Cut is an exhibition that’s not only about the art it’s also about the music that inspires it.  A combination for the senses: street art, ‘paste-ups’, stencil and installation mixed with hip-hop, funk, indie tunes and Melbourne’s finest MC’s- what a combination!

Artwork that would once adorn the bricks and mortar of the infamous laneways will now be showcased in an exciting group show featuring some of Melbourne’s finest street artists. But with an unusual formula: all proceeds from the sale of the art will go directly to the artists – 100%”

Another show we just can’t wait to see!

Exhibition – Space Invaders – Melbourne

In something completely refreshed and promising, direct from the National Gallery of Australia, commissioned by and held at the RMIT University Gallery (Melbourne CBD), comes the travelling street art show ‘Space Invaders’.

After the success of its grand opening in Canberra last year, Space Invaders has been touring nationally, and now the showcase of Australian street art hits Melbourne for its showing. Curated by Jaklyn Babington (NGA), and with over 40 Australian artists involved and comprising of 150 works, this massive gypsy-esque exhibition was inspired by street arts “transition from the ephemeral to the collectible and from the street to the gallery” since the turn of the Australian graffiti days in the early 1980’s.

“A major strength of Australian street art is its ability to mix pop-culture imagery with political messages. From hard-hitting protest to political satire, clever combinations of sarcasm, mockery and parody, the means to mix art, politics and the street press is now in the hands of a new generation of Australian artists.
Space invaders also explores a paradox that has emerged in Australian street art in which an early flirtation with new technology has given way to a sentimentality for the traditional and the handmade…

This exhibition is supported by the Contemporary Touring Initiative through Visions of Australia, an Australian Government program, and the Visual Arts and Craft Strategy, an initiative of the Australian Government and state and territory governments. The Cultural Partner for Space invaders: australian . street . stencils . posters . paste-ups . zines . stickers is NewActon/Nishi and Molonglo Group. The exhibition is also supported by Special Media Partner Triple J.”

A very exciting venture indeed, this, sort of, acceptance of street art and graffiti into the realms of the contemporary and elite that the National Gallery of Australia does affiliate is a wonderful and hopeful thing! This is the continuation of a show that we, and many, believe is  a step forward in progression, and positive of thinking, when it comes to artistic expression in the modern day. Not to go on a rant here, but maybe this is the kind of event that should be run on the front page of certain ‘propaganda loving’ publications instead of the regurgitated mess that has been gracing us of late!

Please get down to these exhibitions when they show up in your neighbourhood, not just as a spectator and lover of all things art, but as an activist and supporter of the right of self expression!

Exhibition & Event – Ladie Killerz #4 – VIC

This weekend Footscray hosts the massive event Ladie Killerz #4, and what an event it looks set to be. We caught up on all the details and got a few words from one of the organisers, Joske, and have put together a small run down on the event.

“Ladie Killerz is a weekend long, travelling festival,” Joske remarked. “We’ll be celebrating ladies and their killer skills in all things art, music and film and we’ll be showcasing woman in hiphop, and in particular graffiti. Confirmed aerosol artists currently number at around twenty five, with ladies travelling from; Perth, Sydney, Brisbane, and Adelaide – and many more female artists are submitting work into the art exhibition.”

“We started this jam so we could just hang, paint and party with our interstate crew – shit just got outta control”

Since starting four years ago, out of Brisbane, this unique and diversified event has been taken to Adelaide and now Melbourne, evolving into a three day long jam packed awesome festival. Showing off the massive talent of Australian female artists within a range of disciplines but with quite a focus on some outstanding graffiti art.
This will be brought in the form of the Graffiti Paint Jam – A Graffiti Production Wall Mural collaboration, from some of Australia’s most epic female graffers – which will be worked on throughout the festival.

Sunday is the last day of the festival and will be purely for BBQ, Beers and the finishing of the Graffiti Jam Production Wall!

With a huge range of activities spread out over the entire three days, there is an indulgence for any passion or persuasion of art, music, film, culture and graffiti.

These ladies are as hardcore as they are talented, we should never fear the Graff will always be there.  Even if the world ran out of paint forever ”we would start fires, crush charcoal and use spit!” Joske responded.

Interview – Oakley “O.G.” Grenell

The word veteran brings connotations of age, and yet with such a status, Oakley “O.G” Grenell is anything but a wisened patriarch – instead, this youthful “veteran” is so full of vim and vigor that in his thirty years short he has already cut a wide swath, intent as he is in putting as much of his creativity in the hands of his listeners as often as he is able – whether by performing, DJing or releasing records on his label Central Records.

“This is my sixth release in New Zealand, so it’s kind of what I’m here to do, release music and put it out there as much as I can,” he responds sincerely. “I’m hoping to do an album a year. When i first started out I knew my stuff wasn’t really going to be commercially viable to get signed so I decided to throw it down on my own label. I’ve had six releases in seven years, I think.”

Review – Summadayze 2008

Despite the heat, Chromeo absolutely killed it on the main stage. This duo proved that good things really do come in pairs. Covering a range of old and new tracks, with D-Thugg pumping out his vocoded lyrics via a talkbox, the pair had the crowd eating out of their hands. From Fancy Footwork, to You’re so Gangster and all their best in between, funked it up good and proper. As the set wound down, and the lads walked off stage, chants of “Chromeo! woah woah!” erupted, and they came back to with 100% for their finale, leaving a large number of people deeply satisfied. Review – Boogaloo + Back To Battle

Last weekend saw a veritable feast of electronic music. With such a large range of events to choose from in recent days, a sampling of what is currently on offer here in Perth was definitely in order.

Friday night saw a large swath of punters descend on The Nine for the inaugural Boogaloo tracksuit part held in the Bar Open area downstairs. Forgoing the usual route to the upstairs Dnb arena, our group entranced Bar Open, plonked ourselves down, orders drinks, and took stock of our surrounds.

The dulcet sounds of Midnight Star pumped, the dance-battles ensued, and the night was on. Upstairs the DnB continued to pound away, but it was curious to note that many of the Nine regulars were, instead, sitting down below in Bar Open enjoying the smoother sounds of old school electro, boogie and funk whilst we watched the parade of track suit festooned individuals getting down and dirty. Interview – Clandestien

The last several yeas have marked a distinctive change in the face of Australian hip hop. With acts such as the Hilltop Hoods and our own Downsyde making their mark and busting out into the mainstream, and with radio stations playing more local produce, things seem to have shifted. Where once it was very difficult to ever get an australian accented tracks onto the airwaves, things have now shifted rapidly into a window of opportunity. (more…)

Interview – DJ Craze

After having won three DMC World Championships, one would think that a DJ would retire gracefully and rest on his laurels – happy with such a huge accomplishment. Yet six years after his record breaking winning streak, DJ Craze still batters away at the turntables, and has even come to encompass more than simple hip hop beats found in his earlier sets. Turning to DNB as a weapon within his arsenal, Craze turned heads when he decided to branch out into a faster and less well known genre in the US at that time, and set himself up as a dominant force within the DNB scene in North America – yet still retaining his hip-hop and Miami Bass roots. Review – Ministry Of Sound – Perth 2006

Stepping away from dnb for the evening, Greg Packer pulled out his hiphop and stepped up to the decks. Watching Packer playing old school hiphop is always a treat, and the fact that he was able to run for an extra half an hour, dishing out classic after classic was a pleasant surprise. (more…)

Interview – Lil John

With instantly recognisable gravel throated vocals, production techniques and several million album and single sales under their belts, Lil John and his East Side Boyz crew are a near household name throughout the world.

In the early days, Lil John had little idea that such huge success would was looming on the horizon. “You know, I’ve come a looong way man,” ‘John remarks. “When I was just djing I was just living in my mommas basement getting drunk every day. I didn’t have no idea what I was going to be in the future – then Germaine hired me to his label and I was an A&R guy for So So Def – and started doing that. While I was DJing I had a radio show and I used to take hophop a capela’s and put them over Jamaican beats and Jamaican acapella’s and put them over hip hop beats – and that kind of started me off producing.” (more…)
