Exhibition – Audrey Kawasaki – Tangled – WA, VIC & NSW

I’ve been aware of this show for almost a year now, and I’m really excited that all the launch details for Audrey Kawasakis shows at Outre gallery have now been released. Having been a fan for many years and watched her work progress over this time, there is this little hint of jealousy in me knowing that I am far from alone in my unashamed fandom – several of her prints adorn my walls, and I’m totally living in fear of having to eat mi-goreng noodles for a month, just knowing that this show is at Outre gallery the day after payday.

If you seriously haven’t seen Audreys work yet, you should – because you’re missing out on some beautiful stuff – and it looks like the lady herself will be at the Melbourne and Sydney openings at Outre gallery (alas, Perth), so heres your chance to give her the full kudos for her work that she deserves.

“Outré Gallery are extremely proud to be presenting the first major Australian solo exhibition of Audrey Kawasaki’s original paintings, rare prints and fresh editions in October / November 2010.

At once innocent and erotic, Audrey’s gentle and enigmatic visions of femininity have inspired a fan-base which is beautiful in itself … expect more of Audrey’s breathtaking girls and tender renderings.”

Exhibition – On The Wall – Metro Gallery – VIC

Exhibition – On The Wall – Metro Gallery – VIC

We covered news of this show way back in July, but thought that as it  is opening this week, that we would post about it again – and include some special preview images for you that were kindly provided to us by the guys and girls at Metro Gallery.

Since it was announced, Anthony Lister, Rone and Vexta have also been added to its roster – rounding this show out to be set as one of the finest collections of Australian and international street art to be displayed here.

Cant wait!

onthewallthumb thumb Exhibition On The Wall – Metro Gallery VIC

“This show will be one the biggest collection of contemporary street art ever shown in Australia, and includes pieces by some of the most notorious internationally renowned artists including;

Blek le Rat: Blek is considered to be the godfather of stencil art, and has been producing street work for 30 years. He’s both a pioneer on the streets and in the transition to gallery work, and has inspired a generation of stencil artists. His signature Rat stencil that covered the streets of Paris in the 80’s is one of the most striking images in street art history.

Banksy: Banksy hardly needs any introduction, he’s by far the most sought after street artist in the world but has managed to stay defiantly anonymous.

Shepard Fairey: Shepard has risen from his humble roots as a teenage skater punk distributing homemade stickers via mail order and gone on to create some the most instantly recognisable visual imagery in recent art history, including the oft reproduced ‘Obey’ campaign and most noticeably the Obama ‘Hope’ image that became synonymous with the Democrat’s rise to office.

Nick Walker: English graffiti artist Nick Walker has been combining stencils with his freehand graffiti work since 1992. Nick initially turned to stencils as a means of introducing the realist elements of photography to his works, while still working with spray paint, since this point he has developed a massive international following of his work due to their wit and sense of tongue-in-cheek irony.

D*Face: Growing up in London D*Face was heavily influenced by 80’s American skate culture and punk rock aesthetics. As a teenager D*Face began incorporating these elements into highly stylised graffiti, developing a repertoire of iconic characters and imagery that are highly sought after the world over.

Swoon: Swoon’s work is indebted to both traditional craftsmanship and classic painterly technique, but her execution is entirely modern. It is this method of incorporating both age old techniques and contemporary graffiti practice that makes her work so compelling. She has contributed work to MOMA, Art Basel Miami, and the Brooklyn museum, and is widely considered to be a master contemporary print maker.

Above: Above is nomadic graffiti artist who has travelled around the world creating public art installations since 1995. His signature arrow can be found in more that 65 countries world wide, from stickers, to wheatpastes, to freehand graffiti, to wooden sculptures, Above is a force to be reckoned with.

HA HA: Melbourne’s own HA HA has risen as one of the most prominent figures in the city’s own street art movement. From his notorious Ned Kelly image that blanketed Melbourne in the early 2000’s, to his recent soft edge portraits that are comprised of up to 70 layers, HA HA has remained one of Melbourne’s most notorious street artists.

Hush: Hush is an English artist who spent a number of years in Japan working as a toy designer, his graffiti style unites these disparate worlds of Western decay, Eastern pop, and design elements. Drawing on the classic motif of the female form, Hush creates beautifully layered symphonies of colour compositions.

Stormie: Australian native Stormie has been producing street work since 1984. His dark depictions of contemporary urban life have seen him travel across the world, painting in London, Los Angeles, Berlin and Tokyo. Stormie’s personal style is entirely unique, and has earned him a cult following the world over.”

Exhibition – Sara Blake – Constellations – NSW

Exhibition – Sara Blake – Constellations – NSW

The other day in my hypertextual wanderings I stumbled across an announcement that New York based illustrator and artist Sara Blake aka Zso, was having a solo show in Sydney – and was suitably excited to hear of it. Sara has done a huge range of illustrative and design work work with Curvy, Zen magazine, Village Voice,  amongst many others and its great to see a show by her on our shores!

Named one of the Top 100 female graphic designers and illustrators in the world by Curvy magazine, art director, designer and illustrator Sara Blake brings her latest works to Sydney, for her very first Australia show. Blake’s work has graced magazines, fashion pages and products around the world including The New Yorker, Grey Goose, Condé Nast, Hennessey and Bacardi.

Her latest show, CONSTELLATIONS, reflects the vibrancy and excitement of the New York landscape with its colour, movement and texture. Using geometric lines and curves, soft and hard Blake captures the stories and world of women in her city. Stories about love, heartache, joy, independence, sorrow, loneliness and second chances.

“While the subject of much of my art is women, the art itself is really more about the world at large seen through these women. Just as there are dualities in our experience of life, and there are dualities in my personality, my work inadvertently has adopted some of these qualities visually.”

So if you’re in Sydney town and want to see some of her work in the flesh, go and check out her opening this Thursday at Surry Hills Friends Of Leon Gallery.

Exhibition – Yone – Shake that Ass – VIC & NSW

You’ve seen the announcements all over already, and if you haven’t, then I guess you’re not as much of a artnews junky as me – either that or you’ve been in a coma, (either/either) but this week sees  one of the most amazing “lo fi sexy” photographers in the world right now – Yasumasa “Yone” Yonehara, opening not one, but two shows in both Melbourne and Sydney.

“Yasumasa ‘Yone’ Yonehara is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic and influential magazine editors and photographers in Japan.

During the 90s Yonehara’s work with the iconic Egg Magazine was instrumental in the emergence of ‘kogyaru’ (Japanese schoolgirl) culture into the global consciousness.

Yonehara’s signature ‘lo-fi sexy’ photographic style was established though a collection of erotic Fujifilm ‘cheki’ shots for Smart Girls with some of Tokyo’s hottest models. The unprecedented success of his first book, a folio of these Smart Girl portraits, bestowed him instant fame.

It was at this point that Yonehara’s sphere of influence became global, with brands such as American Apparel ‘appropriating’ his unique photographic style for use in advertising campaigns. A new genre of editorial photography was born, founded on Yonehara’s instant Polaroid style.”

Exhibitions(s) – Last Chance Studios Excellent Adventure

Exhibitions(s) – Last Chance Studios Excellent Adventure

Perth, Sydney and Melbourne are in for a massive treat over the next two months, as the rapidly rising and incredibly talented stable of artists at Perths Last Chance Studios hit the road with a showcase of their work.

If you haven’t seen or heard from at least one of the artists involved with Last Chance over the past eighteen or so months since their inception, I’d have to shake my head in your general direction – because Daek, Kid Zoom, Creepy, Sean Morris, Ryan Boserio and Tim Rollin have all been totally ripping it up both as a collective, and on an individual level.

This is must see stuff.

“LAST CHANCE STUDIO’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE marks the first time that the artists of Last Chance have united to bring the full force of their movement across the nullabor. And they are doing it in style – throwing caution and logistical nightmares to the wind, and declaring their intent to put on three completely separate art shows in three cities in two weeks.

The adventure begins on Friday, September 24th at 6pm with Kick It Like Jujitsu – a massive installation painting at The Bakery, on James Street in Northbridge, Last Chance’s home town. The Last Chance boys will be joined by AM crew guest artists and Sydney’s Beastman to paint out the entire gallery for this show, which opens up Semi-Permanent 2010, and will also be the exhibition that re-opens The Bakery after 18 months of renovations.

The gang then heads to Sydney to paint some walls, make some friends and open Face Palm Your Demons – an exhibition of new paintings and drawings and a collaborative installation painting at Oh Really Gallery in Newtown, Sydney. Opening drinks start at 6m, Thursday September 30 and the show runs until October 10.

From there it’s on to Melbourne, for another week of art escapades culminating Why Aren’t You Naked? – Another exhibition of completely new artworks and wall paintings by the collective, at the new No Vacancy Project Space in Federation Square. The show opens at on Thursday, October 7 at 6pm and runs until October 24.

Daek says that Melbourne and Sydney folks should come down to the openings if they would like to “Make some good friendly pals they can come stay with if they want to visit nice beaches in the summer.” Asked to describe the fortnight of antics they have ahead of them, he imagines that it will probably be “Exactly like Robocop wearing Nintendo power gloves watching The Wizard in an epic gaming montage.”

Exhibition – Busy Busy Busy – TCB – Melbourne

Exhibition – Busy Busy Busy – TCB – Melbourne

Got this through last night for a group show coming up at TCB Gallery. Looks to be an eclectic collection of artists from a variety of different mediums and artistic walkways – something a little different to check out and soak up!

“The exhibition title ‘busy, busy’, comes from the phrase ‘Busy, busy, busy’ which is what people of the fictional religion, ‘Bokonon’ (from the novel ‘Cats Cradle’ by Kurt Vonnegut), whisper upon witnessing an example of how interconnected everything is.

The invite image (below) is a reassertion of this idea of idea and truth lost within each other, both existing simultaneously and unconnected similarity: the image is of a false computer window featuring a seemingly abstracted pattern titled ZOOMLEARYNOSE.JPG, an image file name, yet the abstracted pattern is an actual portion of magnification from a JPG of Dr Timothy Leary’s nose, the most well known and determined advocate of the consciousness expanding drug, LSD. In reality, the image isn’t even a JPG file type image file, its a bitmap or a BMP image type.

The work within ‘busy, busy’ focuses on coincidence and connection between seemingly disparate or unrelated… ah things, you know, objects, images, subject matter, whatever dude, whatever. It is filled with irreverence against logic, a working model of the universe, albeit infinitely smaller and confined to representation via artworks in all their fallible glory.”

Exhibition – Adrian Baldsing – Changelings – Perth

From the looks of it, Perth is starting to really ramp up in the next few months in terms of shows – and we had word of this one from up and coming artist Adrian Baldsing at the newly minted (previously Mixtape) These Days gallery. Don’t have too much info on this one as yet, but we’re hoping to touch base with the artist to get the low down – the work of his we’ve seen around the traps looks pretty sweet.

I am absolutely stoked to hear word of this show. I’ve been following Deej’s work now for a few years, and have always hoped that he’d get around to doing a show sooner rather than later – and here it is.

Nicely Toasted will be a great showcase of this talented designer and artists amazingly works, featuring a “collection of girls, gangsters and evil clowns” – what more could you want? For me, possibly a teleporter.

Exhibition – Twoone & Thomas Jackson – The Absence Of Man – Sydney

Its always great to see Twoone doing shows, and this time he teams up with Thomas Jackson for a short run duo show at China Heights in Surry Hills – gotta love collaborative exhibitions.

“The absence of man’ is an exhibition by twoone and thomas jackson, two artists well known to the melbourne street art scene. although exhibiting along side each other for many years, this is the first exhibition these acclaimed artists have done exclusively together. both artists use an abstract touch of nature to take you to a new world where nature has retaken the world, and the absence of man is seen by the decrepit remains of old buildings and natural regrowth. these artists’ choice of colours and attention to detail make it easy for the viewer to disappear into the world they have created. the framing of their work almost makes you believe they are looking through a window into this strange and beautiful world. these two artists fascination of the ‘found’ and ‘mans need to build’, mixed with a love of nature has really come through in this body of work. in the absence of man, nature will take over.”

Exhibition – Ears – Warpaint – Sydney

I’m loving all the shows that the new Lo-fi collective have been putting on recently, there seems to be such a dearth of talent that they are displaying in recent weeks, and the next one is no exception – this time, they’re showcasing Sydney born artist and member of Oh Really, Daniel O’Toole, aka Ears, with his upcoming Warpaint solo show. Exhibition – Driftwood – Oh Really Gallery – Cancelled

Just had some news from Oh Really …

“Oh Really Gallery is sad to announce that the Drift Wood Show for this thursday 9th September is Cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. We greatly appreciate the work that was sent in for the show and we are sad that we couldn’t go ahead with it.

On the bright side, Oh Really is proud that Ears is having a solo show this Saturday 11th Sept at Lo Fi Collective, 383 Bourke St, Darlinghurst.”

After two years, Oh Really Gallery have put on some damn  fine shows – and now its time for them to celebrate in style with a huge lineup of artists in their upcoming group show, Driftwood, this Thursday the 11th.

Featuring works by Beastman, Numskull, Ears, Max Berry Phibs, Ghostpatrol, Mike Bennett, Drypnz, BirdHat, Georg Whelan, Shida, Michael Hazel, Syke and more, this looks to be a diverse and stunning display of cool talent.

“September 2010 marks the second year anniversary of Oh Really Gallery, we’re celebrating a space built on high hopes, little experience and pockets full of busking money. Driftwood is a group exhibition that requires working with found wood, revisiting a time when what we discovered on the street was treasured working material. Before opening Oh Really we were drawing characters on pieces of old wood, spraying cupboard doors and giving them away for donations. ‘Driftwood’ is an ode to the busking days and the spirit of the culture we are apart of find something others discard and make it beautiful. The street provides.”
