The news went out last Friday, Curvy is now open for submissions!

Sounds like they are planning an awesomely bumper issue for the next one, they’re teamed up with Semi-Permanent again and will be officially launching the next issue at this years SP in Sydney.

Curvy is a great place for emerging and established female artists to be seen by many, many people and has already featured a whole range of great artists. – so if you think your work is awesome (which we’re sure it is) then get a submission in before it closes on Friday February the 17th at 5pm.

Tropical paradises seem no brainers for big outdoor art events, and we just read over at Everfresh that a bunch of the crew, and other Oz artists, such as Kid Zoom, are getting ready to head over to the islands to participate in Pow Wow.

Seriously, What we saw of this last year looked absolutely phenomenal.

"POW WOW IS A GATHERING OF CONTEMPORARY ARTISTS THAT ENGAGES WITH THE BROADER COMMUNITY IN THE PROCESS AND CREATION OF ART.

From February 13 to 18, 2012, Honolulu will host over thirty artists from around the world. Opening and closing events will be held at Loft in Space, with the production of art being done all over the streets of Kaka’ako. During POW WOW, the community is encouraged to interact with visiting artists in a creative environment.

ABOUT POW WOW HAWAI’I

The beauty of art is most commonly enjoyed during its final stage. All the blood, sweat and tears happen behind closed doors. However, that is where the real grandeur lies. The process. Imagine for a moment a gathering of internationally renowned artists in one place. A place that will allow them to do what they do best: be creative. We give them the tools, the space and the freedom to paint for one week. We make that process open to the public, allowing them full engagement and interaction between the artists and their audience. EXHIBITION DETAILS

The opening night of “POW WOW Hawai’i 2012” will take place on Saturday, January 18th, 2012 at Loft in Space from 6:00pm to 10:00pm. Before the opening night, the visiting artists will be painting all over the streets of Kaka’ako from January 13th to the 17th. Additionally, Eugene Kan of Hypebeast has curated a photography exhibition titled “Day Job?” and Arktip magazine has created a pop up shop. These events all open at the same time as POW WOW Hawai’i and are also held at Loft in Space."

You have two weeks to get your tickets, people – god damn being in saving mode. God. Damnit wish we could get there to cover it- argh, just seeing 123Klan (one of my ALL time favourites) on the bill would be more than enough to justify the trip, but all those other names plus soem of the best from Oz? The fabulous Cocoa Jackson Studios, who we featured a few weeks ago will be playing host to the next Trails drawing session. Trails has been running for some time, now and as a previous attendee, we can say with certainty that its a hell of a lot of fun.

All are welcome – all you have to do is rock up and draw alongside other artists. You never know who will be turning up, but it’s always a riot of talent and sketching goodness. The nights are run by the infamously cool MP Fikaris, who always ensures plenty of supplies of paper, pens and enthusiasm are on hand.

So come down this Friday night and join in the drawing fray – plus, it’s a great chance to check out Cocoa Jackson if you haven’t made it there yet!

Can we get a fuck yeah!? Really, the language is justified, even given this is an all ages event, it’s pretty much what we said when we first heard about it, and then said again when we saw the flyer for it. Marvel vs street art, all at RTIST Gallery?

As massive comic fans and people who have been looking forward to the Avengers movie since the first time we saw one of those bloody cryptic end-scenes on the Marvel movies, we here can’t wait for this event.

"Ahead of the theatrical release of the Super Hero team up of a lifetime – Marvel’s The Avengers – the Marvel Street Art Battle is a live Marvel themed street art event where two of Australia’s leading street artists will compete to bring the colours and characters of the Marvel universe to life.

Hosted by an emcee and supported by a local DJ, this free all-ages event is open to the public who will choose the ultimate winner of the street art battle.

Marvel enthusiasts will have the opportunity to meet Marvel comic artist, David Yardin as well as the chance to win on-the-spot Marvel prizes throughout the afternoon.

A week-long exhibition of original Marvel comic artwork by David Yardin will also be unveiled at the event."

Comics and street art have been a match made in urban heaven right from the very start, and its grand to see artists from both worlds joining forces for an event of this nature. From what we’ve heard, it’s Sirum and Shem who will be involved on the live graff battle front, and we couldn’t think of anyone better!! According to the Just Another Agency blog, Sirum has also just been signed to Marvel? Not completely sure what that e ntails,. but if it means more Sirum superhero characters on walls … Fuck. Yeah!

Welcome to 2012 all! We’ve had a pretty restful break – lots of painting and a few ciders here and there and a hell of a lot of relaxing and doing absolutely nothing – just what we needed!!

So, catching up on a bit of a backlog, we have a whole heap of snapshots to come – we have the remainder of this Decembers Top 10s to go and some roundups of what our friends thought were the best pics all year, and we also have some studio visits, Union Lane paintup and other cool paint-up shit.

For now, we wanted to share our shots from Blenders Xmas party – which pretty much started off our break with a massive bang! It was a hell fun night, with some great art on display and a whole bunch of friends and cool cats! Enjoy!

Back in early November, we heard about a new online radio venture of some ambition that was happening over in Perth; loving music as we do (and having a close association with OnlineClubber who run out of our studios in Prahran), we got in touch, got the low down on the project and did the typical networking thing.

A couple of weeks later, I’m in Perth playing best man at MC Assassins wedding – it’s been huge day, I’ve sunburnt the crap out of myself (and my newly shaven head) and I’ve been drinking solidly since about 1pm. Sometime late in the night, I’m hanging with an old friend, wondering where the hell I’m going to crash – so I head back to her mates place, to find some floor space.

When I look around, it seems that the house is in a state of some sort of construction; not long after, I’m given a tour of the newly created office space and studio space in the various rooms and realise where I am – by some piece of typical Perth-everyone-knows-fkn-everyone connect, I’ve landed in the heart of the Backyard Project.

Their mission statement is clear, and with over 100 DJs on their list (we saw it) and an idea to put together an all-round arts hub, this is the kind of project that we absolutely love to support.

“Ever been at a party where the music just doesn’t cut it? We all have, and who knows a DJ at a drop of a hat? The Backyard Project does.

BYP is a place where peeps can log on and have quality DJs kick start their night.

The station features established Perth artists such as Frankie Button, Paul Malone, Low-Key Fu, Tomas Ford, and Charlie Bucket to a new breed of Producer in the form of Arms in Motion, Boost Hero Man, Eggchan and Sibalance – to international artists such as Ridney, Friction Machine, and Andrew Herman.”

After the tour, I’m looking at the walls and think “Man, they should paint this shit up …” so threw the idea at them and passed on a few names. So it was that last weekend a whole bunch of Perth crew descended on the house and did what they do best.

With artists such as NVS, Miss Tones, Omens, Skure and Heyou painting up, the whole house received a complete makeover – adding even more of a creative vibe to a place already bursting with it.

We’re really looking forward to hearing more about what these guys get up to over there, and we’re stoked to see their walls adorned with some of the coolest talent in Perth.

Another Christmas Art Market is on its way, and this time it’s Adelaides turn!

Espionage Gallery has had a great year. Opening up back in January 2011, they have had a whole slew of great shows over the past twelve months, and they’re celebrating a successful year with a Christmas Art Market.

"With over 14 stalls bursting with amazing goods that have been
hand-crafted by some of Adelaide’s most talented artists and makers,
this is one market not to be missed!

The markets will run 5 – 9.30 pm, with music and beverages available
all night long. In addition, gracing the walls is our current
exhibition ‘Wise & Quirky’, the solo exhibition of Julia Blanka
Lesniewski."

Sounds like a really great day to end off a great year!

As Xmas begins to roll its way casually towards us, and as we start going ever so slightly insane from carols in the supermarket, its always good when artists take some of the more traditional aspects of the season and transform them into something new …

This is the core of the idea behind Street Advent, which will be running for 25 days in the lead up to Christmas day. Using the traditional form of the advent calendar, twenty five Melbourne and International street artists have signed up to present a new piece of street art for each day of December up until the 25th. Where these pieces will be, who will be doing what day, an where they will be unveiled is anyone’s guess – but that’s half the fun!

The images will be posted online each day after the work is in place, with a few clues maybe as to where its located – then its up to you to find them.

The first pieces are already going up, such as this fantastic one from I & The Others, so get onto it, and enjoy this special Christmas event from a whole heap of talented artists!

Man, what a battle. We have to say, this one was so damned close and it was extremely hard to figure out who would come out on top, but, at the end of the day El Toasto managed to bring the goods for the judges and the audience. Facing off against the amazingly flooring lettering skills of Mr Reliable, the gorgeous colours of Broes, Rad 11s impeccable skills with shading and figurative work, and Ohnoes highly detailed and immaculately rendered work … well, it was close as close can get.

There’s just something about art and backyards that go together – drinks, bbqs and good weather makes for a pretty ideal day, and, when you couple that with a bunch of highly creative friends, you often get art jams that are second to none.

Taking it one step further, Primo! Mag and The Outsiders decided that just hanging out and doing art wasn’t enough – they wanted to share it with everyone, and so Backyard Play was born!

"PRIMO! Magazine & The Outsiders are two like mind crews who have already established a place in the local Art scene. They have joined forces to create a burgeoning new collective called BACKYARD PLAY. This collective aims to cultivate a greater sense of community amongst Street & Graffiti Artist. They hope to break down the stigma that surrounds their beloved chosen Art forms.

The idea, to bring together Artists, friends & community in a way that personalises the medium of their Art as well as promotes creativity & collaboration in their very own backyards. Through shared experience, BACKYARD PLAY hopes to bring more understanding of the process of creating Street Art & Graffiti as well as the shared experience of childhood play & the shared experience of a dedicated day of painting together. The first of these days took place on 6.8.2011 in a backyard in Sydney & the result is the first BACKYARD PLAY exhibition.

6 Artists created works inspired by the theme Backyard Play using a range of media such as aerosol, pen, paint and texta. They barbecued, drank beer & painted together, making Art in the same place at the same time they influence each others work & created an inspiring work environment. This day also held a deeper message of reflection for the Artists, with a loose theme of nostalgia & ‘childhood’, which encouraged them to draw upon their background & influence in order to convey their message. This is all reflected in the show in what we hope to turn into a regular playtime.

BACKYARD PLAY is a celebration of the things that hold a community together & knit you to your community like pride, nostalgia, diversity & notions of home."

You probably even recognise a few of the names from the Sydney Secret Wars list – there’s quite a few of the competitors taking part in this event.There will also be a really cool doco of the event on show, which was made by Will Hodgett & Daniel Repetti – along with the photography that’ll also be on display you’ll be able to get a great sense of how the show developed. Put it all together, and this looks mad – get to it!

We had the pleasure of attending the first On The Wall at Finders Keepers here in Melbourne, and thought that the quality of the artwork on display was top notch.

For the next Finders Keepers in Sydney, it looks like they’ve pumped it up even more, and just browsing the list there is a huge crop of talent.

If you haven’t had the chance to get to a Finders Keepers market yet, and you’re in Sydney, then this is a good opportunity to do so. Not only will there be lots of crafty design goodness, but there’ll be a hell of a lot of great art as well.

Back in October, we finally had a chance to get down to one of the Trails drawing sessions. Hosted by Braddock at the infamous Blender Studios, the theme behind Trails is simple – you turn up, take a pen, and draw your heart out alongside others in a mad massive collaborative fun fest.

Held once a month, Trails has been running since 2009, and in that time all kinds of artists and creatives have joined in on the event. It’s laid back, entertaining and welcoming of all. So, no matter your level, if you want to draw, chat and have a couple of polite beverages in great company, then this is a cool event to do it at.

As we said back in our Cool Guide To Art Blogs, we really do love the crew over at Acclaim Mag!  They’ve hit that awesome silver jubilee, and will be releasing their 25th edition in December. Acclaim usually runs themed issues these days, and this time around they have something special – what better to cover in this one than their homeland – Oz!

That’s not all though, in addition to the special Australian feature, they’re delving into a bit of conservation awareness. The Australian Southern Drop Bear, (Ursu Occasus) has for many years (since it was declared a protected species) been a much maligned victim of superstition, hostility and unlawful vegemite poisoning in rural areas. This victimisation has seen its presence drop dramatically in and it is now seen very rarely in its natural habitats, and sightings are few. It is now feared that it may very well become extinct within a short time.

We’re animal lovers here at Invurt, and we’ve always had a soft spot for the Drop Bears – and Acclaim have now stepped up and will be dedicating an amazing Drop Bear themed art show to draw attention to its plight – happily, this show will also double as the official launch, so as far as we’re concerned, we’re there already.

to help raise awareness for the plight of the Drop Bear.

A selection of some of today’s most exciting local and international artists have pledged their support for the Drop Bear cause and will be delivering artworks in celebration of this iconic Australian creature."

“The Southern Drop Bear (Ursu Occasus), one of Australia’s
most unique marsupial species sits on the brink of extinction
due to the rapid depletion of their native habitat. A mysterious
creature, the Drop Bear is now so rare in number that many
wrongly perceive the species to be one of myth and legend,
allowing for public attention to be diverted to more widely
recognized species currently under threat.

Similar to Koalas in size and appearance, the nocturnal Drop
Bear is a distant relative of the Koala species, however unlike
it’s docile cousin, the Drop Bear evolved as a carnivorous
creature, equipped with sharp claws and teeth and exists
upon a primary diet of small birds and lizards.

Rapid deforestation in the early eighties lead to a spate of
Drop Bear attacks on humans who unwittingly stumbled
into the territory of a creature now close to starvation and
desperate for food alternatives. The terrifying nature of
a Drop Bear attack, in which the creatures plunge from
the forest canopy onto the heads of their victims lead to
widespread paranoia and despite no recorded deaths from
Drop Bear attacks in over a hundred years, the Victorian
government sanctioned a cull of the species in 1984.

Thankfully, the killing of Drop Bears was officially outlawed
nationally in 1996 and the species was officially added to the
Endangered list, but by this time the damage was done and
the Southern Drop Bear population was decimated. In 2009
a Monash University study of the species estimated their
numbers to be less than 1000 across small areas of forest in
Victoria and New South Wales.

Sightings of the animal are
extremely rare, leading to speculation that total extinction is
likely within the next five years.”

It was a sad moment last week when I got the invite from the At Large crew about their closing down event this coming weekend. I knew it was on its way, but it was still lamentable when I got the invitation to their very last event – and I’m even sadder still that I can’t attend due to being in Perth for the weekend!

It’ll be hard to imagine Northcote without At Large Gallery – and I can’t help but say a few words about the people, shows, and the crew there. Please excuse me whilst I take a rare moment to talk on a personal level – and, in case you don’t want to read my shit, just jump down to the bottom of the post for all the info on the actual event!

I attended the opening of At Large (I’m pretty sure it was the first article I posted on this blog, actually), and I even had a piece in that very first show – I believe that was the first show in Melbourne that I had put a piece in since I’d moved here. I’d met the crew through a mutual friend pretty much as soon as I had first arrived in the ‘burn – two people whose own art I immediately loved, and who had, no, made, time for someone who was still fresh eyed and full for questions about Melbourne and its art.

As it happened, I also put some work into a few other group shows there, and, I had two of my own there also. The biggest moment, for me, was holding my first solo show, Inhabited Times, at the gallery – which was amazing and had an amazing turn out. I pretty much did the show because of the guys there, they inspired me – after years of drawing in books and never showing anyone the stuff I’d been doing, they made me so comfortable and were so encouraging that I couldn’t not – they helped me take my art out of my own private little world  – and since then, I haven’t looked back.

Invurt and the crew at At Large also put on the group show there, Cardbordia with a bunch of other great artists, it was so much fun covering the walls in Cardboard and making an instillation styled show – what a blast.

So, to say that the place has a special place in my heart is an understatement. At Large, the crew themselves and their many helpers, as well as the people I met through the gallery and its shows,  and those I became friends with along the way, were one of the inspirations behind my starting this whole website – if you’re a fan of Invurt, then there’s a part of thanks that should be directed to the At Large crew for what you see today.

Beyond myself, there is absolutely no questions as to what these guys did for the Melbourne art, and upcoming and established artists. You need to only look at the list of exhibitions they’ve held over the past three years to get an inkling as to the kinds of artists they helped promote and support, the shows that they worked on and the events that they also held. With names like Heesco, Adi, Simz, Mupz, Jak Rapmund, Nicole Tattersall, Mishap, Rachee Renee, Sketch City and so many more … take all those great shows, and combine them with a whole range of events, battles, workshops, live art, great tunes, good beer, great people – well.

We have always run At Large as we felt fit, and through this unconventional practice have met some truly amazing Artists, DJs, Emcees, and some of the most chilled beautiful down to earth people here, (some of who are now our family.) We have run countless gigs, openings, exhibitions and festival days, and it has been a great hub for Artists and all sorts. The ride has been amazing and unforgettable, but for now we just need a break, and a new chapter to focus on our lives and our own art.

Mishap and Dopio will be back in 2012 curating and participating in battles and exhibitions, burning walls and getting drunk in your backyard. We would love to thank every single person who made the last few years what it was by buying a can of paint, sharing a beer or spliff, or coming to a show. We are humbled by the amount of support we’ve gotten from our big Melbourne fam, customers and regulars. It has been an absolute pleasure.

Anyways, the silver lining about the gallery closing is also personal – I can’t help but feel a little lightened at the news knowing that this now frees up two of my mates to come painting with us on the weekends (which is the only time I get to paint due to this whole full time work bullshit!). They’ve already both taught me a lot – about painting, about Melbourne, and about a whole bunch of amazing artists and creative individuals that they tirelessly supported – and I really can’t wait to hit some walls with them now that they aren’t stuck in the gallery.

Well, we’re back up in Sydney for Outpost Project, and today we’ll be covering Secret Wars as well as new stuff on the island since we were here for the opening – Mike Watt vs Shannon Crees! Well also cover some of the “Graffiti Hiphop” event. . Both start at 2pm!

With a huge range of international talent, Self Est. lands in Sydney this Thursday with a massive feast of art and works from both here at home, and across the seas. Curated by Joseph Allen Shea and Marty Routledge, who hail the event as "Contemporary Art From Outside The Institutions" Self Est. is another feather in the cap for Sydney, showcasing street art, graffiti, illustration, painting and everything in between.

"Self Est is a four day art event exploring contemporary art from alternative backgrounds. This first installment of Self Est (short for Self Established) investigates the study of letterforms and pavement-based education. Self Est presents art created outside the traditional academy that has infiltrated the institution.

These art forms may be self-taught, intuitive or born from marginal activities such as commercial art, graffiti or skateboarding. Taking motivation from these auxiliary artistic pursuits these artists bring unconventional and unique twists to fine art and are being recognised by galleries and institutions."

Invurt went to Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange last night to see Pierre Lloga and Heesco do some live art for the event at Melbournes Docklands. It was a pretty interesting night, as Smirnoff went all out in creating a unique nightlife experience.

With four differently themed rooms, we found ourselves mostly in the “urban streets” with Heesco and Pierre scribbling their wall of ghouls, heros and ladies over a dancefloor blasting some of the freshest house tracks, all as people pedalled away through the streets of Italy on a virtual bike ride. The Paris/Milan room, with some of the hottest models strutting their stuff across a catwalk headed by some great DJ’s at the front was also fun. This room then led through to the Arctic wonderland,complete with industrial sized fans, snow machine from Dean Sunshines Snowmasters, and video games (Ah, theres just something about chicks and fans!).

Finally through a long corridor into the main massive Smirnoff rave, it seemed. With a big stage, swirling visuals, thumping sound system and impressive light show. Once Heesco and Pierre finished off their piece, the scafolding was removed and we got to see the piece in all its glory – theres just something about the combination of these two artists work that pops off the page, it was an amazing collaboration!

Smirnoff pulled all the stops to make this a massive night, and the Invurt crew enjoyed themselves immensely – so please enjoy the photos from the event … for more photos from the night, check out the Facebook Gallery on our page.

We love seeing more stuff out in regional areas, and a paste up party sounds pretty cool. Is curated, but from what we hear there might be extra space of other paste up artists nearby – so if you want to put something up or check it out, head out to Bendigo this Sunday.

"This is it! The installation of the art prize offered to Bendigo artists through the recent A2D exhibition! This prize has been made possible through the sponsorship of Bendigo businesses Jools For Jim, Red Door Boutique and El Gordo Cafe & Art Space.

Six local artists have had their work from the A2D exhibition invited to be a part of a paste up mural, along the wall in front of El Gordo in Chancery Lane*.

(*Please note that due to limited space available, the work going up in this area on Nov 12 is curated and by invitation only. Do get in contact with Megan if you would like your work to also be considered – and, the Council-owned wall at the southern end of Chancery Lane is another option to make the event even bigger on the day, as it is open for artists to paste up work any time. Lots of space!)
Dale Harris, Kara Rice, Pat Thompson, Reece Hendy, Alice Fraser & Chris Kennett. Two other local artists – Rhayven Jane, Kelly Robson & Rick Whateley – have also offered to contribute works to the mural on the day, which has been accepted.

The prize is part of the current ‘progressive’ street art paste up project ‘Ground Level’, which has been occurring throughout 2011 in Chancery Lane, supported by local businesses, Bendigo Council & Latrobe Uni.
The winning artworks will be installed at 1pm, Saturday November 12, by the artists. You are invited to come along and be a part of the event!"
