Interview – Luke Taaffe

Interview – Luke Taaffe

Back a couple of weeks ago, artist, designer and lover of waves Luke Taaffe had a duo exhibition with Beastman up in Brisbane – and, at the time, I hit him up with a few questions, as per as often as I can whenever I see a cool artist doing a show. As happens though, the man was completely smashed for time, which, between his solo show and finishing of the latest Summer 11 Roxy collection, was completely understandable.

He didn’t forget about it though, and, graciously, as soon as he found the time to do so, he sent an email back – and it was a great reply! I’ve been waiting for a perfect time to put it up since getting it, and that seems to be now, because this guy deserves an amount of undivided attention for the progress, passion, and determination to which he’s applied his creative skills over the past few years …

Exhibition – Yone – Shake that Ass – VIC & NSW

You’ve seen the announcements all over already, and if you haven’t, then I guess you’re not as much of a artnews junky as me – either that or you’ve been in a coma, (either/either) but this week sees  one of the most amazing “lo fi sexy” photographers in the world right now – Yasumasa “Yone” Yonehara, opening not one, but two shows in both Melbourne and Sydney.

“Yasumasa ‘Yone’ Yonehara is undoubtedly one of the most dynamic and influential magazine editors and photographers in Japan.

During the 90s Yonehara’s work with the iconic Egg Magazine was instrumental in the emergence of ‘kogyaru’ (Japanese schoolgirl) culture into the global consciousness.

Yonehara’s signature ‘lo-fi sexy’ photographic style was established though a collection of erotic Fujifilm ‘cheki’ shots for Smart Girls with some of Tokyo’s hottest models. The unprecedented success of his first book, a folio of these Smart Girl portraits, bestowed him instant fame.

It was at this point that Yonehara’s sphere of influence became global, with brands such as American Apparel ‘appropriating’ his unique photographic style for use in advertising campaigns. A new genre of editorial photography was born, founded on Yonehara’s instant Polaroid style.”

Friday Wrap & The Week Ahead

Melbourne

  • Ghostpatrol had his solo exhibition Warps Points and Seed Vault save points open last night. Melbourne Art & Culture Critic has a short review of the exhibition here – I checked it out when it seemed to be at its most busy, some wonderful work in there – looking forward to seeing it when its a little quieter. We did a really cool interview with the man himself here.
  • Nicole Tattersalls solo exhibition, “Patchworked” opens tonight – I saw a couple of her pieces when I was picking up some of the work left over from my show last night, and it looks great! Also check out the interview we did with her.
  • Paradise Hills opens their door for the first time tonight, with their group exhibition “The Grass Is Always Greener”  opening up tonight in Richmond
  • A new print gallery, Signed & Numbered opened up in Prahran this week, featuring work from a whole slew of our favorite artists. I’ll be checking it out over the weekend to see what its all about – but in the meantime Design Federation did a cool little piece on it the other day – they also sell their prints online.
  • Of course last, but certainly not least – Semi Permanent started today! (If only I could have got the day off this 9-5er, alas) – and in grand style, we have the Just Another Group show – the official SP Melbourne exhibition opening tonight. Yesterday we did a great interview with Toby and Melika from Just Another Agency, the brains behind the show, so have a read, and get on down tonight for a great show – seeya there!

Other news and cool shiz

  • Everfresh have some great pics up from their Sydney book launch – looks like a fun night was had by all.
  • Some cool pics up also of Twoone and Thomas Jacksons Sydney show, the Absence of Man
  • The Melbourne Sweet Streets festival is looking for volunteers to help them out over the duration of the festival – check out the info here. One of the items on the program for the festival is a Stencil Class for Secondary teachers – a great avenue for anyone wanting to help educate students about the greatness that is stencil art.
  • This Life put up a great interview with Eleven & Co, loving the calligraphic styles of his work.
  • We Make Stuff Good keep bringing out the Semi Permanent info goods with an interview with Leif Podhajsky  – this was the first exposure I’ve had to his work, and it was a great introduction – someone I’ll now be keeping an eye on.
  • Its been on a bunch of blogs, but I saw it first at The Opening Hours – Brisbane City Council in all its glory decided to completely buff an amazing legal wall done by Anthony Lister – well done BCC, I’m loving the whole retro Sir Joh era policies! Yay to supporting culture and the arts! :|
  • Okay, so I love rockets – and so does Lauren Orchowski, she went around the US taking photos of all those old 50s and 60s rocket ship playgrounds and produced a book of photographs, called “Rocket Science” from all her shots – some fine urban decay of these cool rusting ships.

Thats about it, fairly quiet this week in the rest of Oz, but if I’ve missed anything please let me know – and, as always, if you have any news or events you want us to cover, please just send us a message.

Ez.

Interview – Just Another Agency

Interview – Just Another Agency

A couple of months ago I saw a new website turn up online – at first glance, I was mostly drawn to it for the beautifully rendered, and oh-so-recognisable, Timba Smits (of Wooden Toy fame) design. It didn’t take me much reading, however, to realise that the website represented something new, and invigorating, amongst both the Australian and international low-brow/design/urban/street/you know scene.

Just Another Agency is somewhat of a misnomer, because after a only a fragment of research, and, having read through the interview below, it feels like anything but “another agency”. The two whirlwinds of frenetic energy behind the JAA master plan, Toby and Melika, are a pair of creatively impassioned champions of that which they love most – emerging or established, stunningly unique creatives from as many different walks of life as the varieties of mediums they represent. Not only do the pair encourage and provide opportunities for their impressive roster of talent, but they are also, in turn, supported by a collective network of friends, artists and other industry entities, formulating a circle of creative representation that is, in my eyes, one of the wonders of the Australian artistic community.

With their first few months of operation spent translating their vision into reality, it came as no surprise that find out that they were given the reins to produce a massive group show to be held in conjunction with the upcoming Melbourne Semi-Permanent conference and to coalescing that vision into the first (of a seemingly many) showcase of the artists under their supportive wing.

Dedicated to their cause, bold and humble, Toby and Melika are at the start of something very cool indeed, and we’re delighted to be able to share a few of their thoughts with you …

Exhibitions(s) – Last Chance Studios Excellent Adventure

Exhibitions(s) – Last Chance Studios Excellent Adventure

Perth, Sydney and Melbourne are in for a massive treat over the next two months, as the rapidly rising and incredibly talented stable of artists at Perths Last Chance Studios hit the road with a showcase of their work.

If you haven’t seen or heard from at least one of the artists involved with Last Chance over the past eighteen or so months since their inception, I’d have to shake my head in your general direction – because Daek, Kid Zoom, Creepy, Sean Morris, Ryan Boserio and Tim Rollin have all been totally ripping it up both as a collective, and on an individual level.

This is must see stuff.

“LAST CHANCE STUDIO’S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE marks the first time that the artists of Last Chance have united to bring the full force of their movement across the nullabor. And they are doing it in style – throwing caution and logistical nightmares to the wind, and declaring their intent to put on three completely separate art shows in three cities in two weeks.

The adventure begins on Friday, September 24th at 6pm with Kick It Like Jujitsu – a massive installation painting at The Bakery, on James Street in Northbridge, Last Chance’s home town. The Last Chance boys will be joined by AM crew guest artists and Sydney’s Beastman to paint out the entire gallery for this show, which opens up Semi-Permanent 2010, and will also be the exhibition that re-opens The Bakery after 18 months of renovations.

The gang then heads to Sydney to paint some walls, make some friends and open Face Palm Your Demons – an exhibition of new paintings and drawings and a collaborative installation painting at Oh Really Gallery in Newtown, Sydney. Opening drinks start at 6m, Thursday September 30 and the show runs until October 10.

From there it’s on to Melbourne, for another week of art escapades culminating Why Aren’t You Naked? – Another exhibition of completely new artworks and wall paintings by the collective, at the new No Vacancy Project Space in Federation Square. The show opens at on Thursday, October 7 at 6pm and runs until October 24.

Daek says that Melbourne and Sydney folks should come down to the openings if they would like to “Make some good friendly pals they can come stay with if they want to visit nice beaches in the summer.” Asked to describe the fortnight of antics they have ahead of them, he imagines that it will probably be “Exactly like Robocop wearing Nintendo power gloves watching The Wizard in an epic gaming montage.”

Exhibition – Busy Busy Busy – TCB – Melbourne

Exhibition – Busy Busy Busy – TCB – Melbourne

Got this through last night for a group show coming up at TCB Gallery. Looks to be an eclectic collection of artists from a variety of different mediums and artistic walkways – something a little different to check out and soak up!

“The exhibition title ‘busy, busy’, comes from the phrase ‘Busy, busy, busy’ which is what people of the fictional religion, ‘Bokonon’ (from the novel ‘Cats Cradle’ by Kurt Vonnegut), whisper upon witnessing an example of how interconnected everything is.

The invite image (below) is a reassertion of this idea of idea and truth lost within each other, both existing simultaneously and unconnected similarity: the image is of a false computer window featuring a seemingly abstracted pattern titled ZOOMLEARYNOSE.JPG, an image file name, yet the abstracted pattern is an actual portion of magnification from a JPG of Dr Timothy Leary’s nose, the most well known and determined advocate of the consciousness expanding drug, LSD. In reality, the image isn’t even a JPG file type image file, its a bitmap or a BMP image type.

The work within ‘busy, busy’ focuses on coincidence and connection between seemingly disparate or unrelated… ah things, you know, objects, images, subject matter, whatever dude, whatever. It is filled with irreverence against logic, a working model of the universe, albeit infinitely smaller and confined to representation via artworks in all their fallible glory.”

Exhibition – Adrian Baldsing – Changelings – Perth

From the looks of it, Perth is starting to really ramp up in the next few months in terms of shows – and we had word of this one from up and coming artist Adrian Baldsing at the newly minted (previously Mixtape) These Days gallery. Don’t have too much info on this one as yet, but we’re hoping to touch base with the artist to get the low down – the work of his we’ve seen around the traps looks pretty sweet.

I am absolutely stoked to hear word of this show. I’ve been following Deej’s work now for a few years, and have always hoped that he’d get around to doing a show sooner rather than later – and here it is.

Nicely Toasted will be a great showcase of this talented designer and artists amazingly works, featuring a “collection of girls, gangsters and evil clowns” – what more could you want? For me, possibly a teleporter.

Interview – Nicole Tattersall

Interview – Nicole Tattersall

Nicole Tattersall is a conscientious, intelligent artist, and so it is that for each showing of her work, she seemingly raises the bar just that little further  in terms of both style and content.

With her informative, regular and entertaining blog, Nicole also expertly wields an rare talent for communication, possibly a by product of her event management background and her curatorial experience – however it is her visual work, of course, that shines above all else, allowing her to project conscientious themes with a subtle degree of beauty.

We were very happy to get to speak with Nicole in the lead-up to the opening of her show Patchworked, at the At Large Gallery in Northcote, and to ask her about the themes of the show, as well as differences in direction that shes exploring …

Interview – Ghostpatrol

Ask a group of people to give a top ten list of Australian artists who produce the styles of art we love, and Ghostpatrol is almost guaranteed to be in each list. From his foundations as a street artist, to his remarkable gallery work and installations, Ghostpatrol is a humble, dynamic artist whose incessant creativity over rides the hubris of scene politics or posturing by just doing what it is that he does best – creating beautiful works and characters that viewers are able to instantly identify with.

We were really lucky to snag some of Ghostpatrols time in the lead-up to his upcoming exhibition at No Vacancy, Warp Points & Seed Vault Save Points, and to get some of his thoughts down in pixels …

Friday Wrap & The Week Ahead

Its been a busy week all round, with my exhibition opening as well as a large number of show announcements and events – I thought I’d try to get a bit more regular with the weekly wraps & roundups, as well as link to a few cool things I’ve seen during the week…

So heres all the stuff thats ‘a happenin … and frak, theres a lot going on at the moment!

Melbourne

  • Tonights opening is in the form of Exhibit A, a great collection of street artists plying their crafted works at Collingwoods The Projects art space. I’ll be heading to this one after work for sure.
  • Ghostpatrol has another solo show coming up next week, Warp Points & Seed Vault Save Points,  at No Vacancy next Thursday – I’ve seen some of the previews, and the work is second to none – this is a show you cant miss – and we just posted up this interview with the man himself, so check it out.
  • Jae Copps solo show My Illusions Architect is still running at Gorker Gallery until the 19th September – I had a chance to wander through there the other day and loved it. We did a really great interview with him as well.
  • Semi-Permanent Melbourne is on next week, and if you haven’t got your tickets already best get in there and purchase them. They have an opening show next Wednesday that is free for all, at the GPO in the Bourke Street Mall, starting around 6pm.
  • A new gallery in Prahran opens up next Thursday in the form of Signed & Numbered – so glad we are getting more stuff on the southside, and it has a fine range of artists on display.
  • My first solo show, Inhabited Times, had an awesome opening, and its still running until September 16th. This Sunday, September 12th, I’ll be at the At Large Gallery from 12pm til 6pm, doing some drawing, giving away a few sketches maybe, and chatting to whoever comes in. Come drop by and check it out, and if you have any questions about the blog or anything else, feel free to come spin some shit with me.

I’ll get to next Fridays openings next Friday, coz I’m pretty sure thats enough for anyones brain right now …

Sydney

  • Everfresh have their Sydney Black Book Launch tonight at Ambush Gallery– if its anything like how the launch here looked last Friday, its going to be a very cool show. I got my copy of the book this week, and damn it is one fine publication, full to the hilt with some amazing work and a great run down on the crew and what they’ve been up to the past few years. If you’re in Sydney, get to the show or go buy the book.
  • Twoone and Thomas Jackson open their new show, The Absence of Man at China Heights gallery, a show looking at the power of nature in, obviously, the absence of man.
  • Ears opens his Warpaint exhibition tomorrow night at the cool new Lo-fi Collective gallery in Darlinghurst – so it looks like a fun weekend of art in Sydney
  • Alas as last week was a such busy one, I missed putting up a notice about the Collected Thoughts Exhibition in Paddington – it runs until the 22nd of September, and has some wonderful artists in it, so check it out.

Brisbane

  • Shida & Georg Whelan have their duo show opening tonight, Nec Spe Nec Metu at Nine Lives Gallery – looks dandy as hell – great to see all this stuff happening in brisvegas!

Other news and cool shiz

Heres some cool stuff I’ve seen this week in my meanderings across the web …
