So much goodness in this post! Finally the release of the epic Happyland doco from Kaffeine and crew, along with a rad exhibition opening! Read on below…

“CELEBRATE THIS SPECIAL PROJECT WITH US, THE DAY BEFORE THE GLOBAL PREMIERE OF OUR DOCUMENTARY!

HAPPYLAND: The paintings, photography + process behind the making of the HAPPYLAND documentary, world premiering at the 2017 Human Rights Arts and Film Festival, ACMI, Federation Square.

Kaff-eine + her international team recently reunited with the two notorious and impoverished dumpsite communities of Baseco + Happyland, Manila, creating + installing a collection of ‘art tarpaulins’ that featured Kaff-eine’s portraits of 10 community personalities. The resulting open-air exhibition celebrated the communities, while also providing them with much-needed resources for shelter.

The HAPPYLAND exhibition includes Kaff-eine’s powerful watercolour portraits of the personalities on the art-tarps including schoolchildren, community workers, laundrywomen, child scavengers, karaoke stars + gangsters. It includes fine art photographs from Marti, Geric + Geloy (‘Pinshands’), who captured the tarp installation process + slum life, which included scavenging, + cooking recycled garbage to eat. The exhibition also includes vignettes of everyday Happyland life, + unique recycled-garbage products made by local garbage-scavenger communities.

Raw, confronting + visually striking, the HAPPYLAND exhibition invites audiences to meet the communities that have such fearsome reputations, + follow how new friends from very different backgrounds collaborate to bring an ambitious project to life in the wastelands of Manila.
