Studio Opening – Squishface Studio – Melbourne

You may remember last years highly successful and ultra cool Inherent Vice open comic studio at the NGV – well, following on from that, several of the artists involved have taken the idea and decided to create Australias first open comic studio.

"Squishface started December 1, 2011. It was Ben Hutchings’ idea, and he picked the name, too. We like it now. The founding members are Arran McKenna, Ben Hutchings, David Blumenstein, Marta Tesoro, Sarah Howell and Sacha Bryning.

We draw there, hang there, sell comics & prints and welcome the public in to say hi. Even the weird ones and the ones who are just casing the joint in case there’s something worth stealing there."

Squishface studio will launch in Brunswick on Australia day with a grand party – with all kinds of live art events, comic launches and other creative activities. We think this is a great idea, and we’re looking forward to seeing a whole bunch of stuff coming out of Squishface – it’s exactly what the independent comic scene needs. We’re wondering why it hasn’t been done before, but we’re really glad its being done now!
