Review - Breakfest 2007

It was hot. How does it go? Damn hot. So hot, I could have done a little crotch pot cooking -and that’s nice if you’re with a lady … but not….oh, wait, that’s been done before.

Really, though, who cared, besides the idiots who didn’t wear enough sunscreen? With arguably the best line-up in years, it was those that didn’t brave the 47c heat that missed out. Not even the sight of Prizzy standing behind the decks with Beauty School Dropout, in full denim jeans, sweating his ass off could damp the enthusiasm of those standing under the shade-cloth - and damn but if they didn’t play a great set regardless. Wish and Ben Mac played a set straight after, and those brave enough to dance in direct radiation were flinging their sweat like monkeys flinging .. Errm. Nevermind.

Q-Bert. Great DJ. Couldn’t get into it. I mean, sure, he played a technically great set, but for the main stage, it was just a bit too sedate? At one stage, looking down into the amphitheatre, all I saw were a bunch of salty revellers swaying from side to side, barely any movement to be seen. All that aside, putting Micah up on at center stage right after was a stroke of brilliance - who else can get people dancing in the sun, burning their asses off and not giving a shit? In no time, it was pandemonium in the ditch.

Stanton Warriors - blam! Off the hook as always, but to be honest there did seem to be something a little subdued about their set. It was the Plump DJs though, that carried the day, with an unusually heavy and darker set that we are used to hearing them play. Sure, there was some party-shiz thrown in, but it was more stomp-stomp than any other time they’ve been here, and it was bloody brilliant. It was dirty, it was dangerous and it fitted right in with pretty much how everyone was feeling by that stage - utterly thrashed.

In reflection, there really isn’t a year when Breakfest doesn’t rock, and this year was no exception, ebven despite the heat and despite the fact that there was way too much electro in the mix. Who knows what will be in store next year, but rest assured the next Breakfest will be slammin, and it will be as hot as it always is - in both senses of the word!
