Review – Parklife 2007

With quick entry to the event, and a near lack of a line even at a peak entry period, Parklife started off with a bang. A huge area, multiple tents, plenty of room for everyone – this looked set to be one of the best starts to the summer festival season for quite some time.

Catching the last track of Electric Limosine, it was with disappointment that it was mostly missed, as the closing track really did sound great. Heading over to the Fire stage, Micah was already punishing the crowd. It was amazing to see how much he had the audience pumping at such an early time, and his party tune selection, as always, was second to none.

Off to the air stage, it was time for the Scratch Perverts. What was on their behalf a great set was unfortunately hampered by some pretty dodgy sound. Their talented mixology was out in full effect however, and many seemed oblivious to the sound issues regardless, merely enjoying the Perverts displaying their craft.

The Herd was a prime example of all that is good about Australian Hip-Hop at the moment. So energetic on stage, with great verses and a way of making the crowd jump, the lads certainly had the crowd in the palm of their hand. These guys are just simply very, very cool at what they do and you could see the crowd getting right into some of their better known tracks.

Passing by Adam Freeland, I had to shake my head as I heard the sounds of the Doors coming through – it all sounded a little same old, same old, and tracks were made way towards Shapeshifter. There is no more that can be said about these kiwis except that they truly are at the top of their game, and they blew away everyone that witnessed them. With tunes (more like songs) so incredibly tight and so varied in spectrum across funky, laidback and pounding d’n’b, as well as beautifully intricate jazzy down-tempo instrumentals – they were the perfect end to what the first impressions of the day promised. These guys definitely the highlight of the event.

Parklife 2007 was a huge success, and one of the best festivals hands down to have hit Perth in recent times. From the organisation, to the security, to the venue and the music (beyond a few minor annoyances in regards to sound here and there) everything just worked in a great combination between live and dj acts. Fuzzy and Boomtick, heres your salute – that was some gig.
